After helping lead Collinsville to its first state title game in football two years ago, University of Tulsa quarterback signee Seth Boomer is also trying to propel the Cardinals’ basketball program to new heights.

On Saturday night, Boomer had 19 points to spark the No. 11 Cardinals to their first Class 5A regional title, 60-56, over unranked Hale at East Central.

The Cardinals (15-10) will have two chances next weekend to pick up the one win needed for their first state tournament berth since 1976. Hale (9-15), for the first time since 2007, also advances to the area tournament, but needs to win two games to qualify for the state tournament.

“It’s amazing,” Boomer said. “I keep thinking about our 2015 state (football) run, and that’s in the back of my head, but I’m just trying to take it one game at a time.”

Boomer is in his final basketball playing days before focusing on football.

“I was so ready to play this year,” Boomer said. “I had a decision to make (on whether to play basketball), but I wanted to come back, and this is the exact reason I came back. It’s awesome.”
