Congratulations to Coach Smith, a future national HOF coach and a great, great human being.

I’ve probably posted this before, but when Coach Smith was announced as the HC at Tulsa, I was working for DuPont in Wilmington, DE. I wrote him a letter congratulating him and explained that I worked for DuPont, was a Tulsa grad, etc.

He sent me a handwritten letter stating how happy he was for the opportunity at Tulsa. He also stated that his mother had worked many years at one of our textile fiber plants in North Carolina.

Then in Indianapolis in 2000, I was attending a high school matchup of the USA’s best versus the best internationals the day before the Final Four started. I spotted him sitting nearby and introduced myself and mentioned the letter he sent me after his hiring. Although he couldn’t remember my name, he did recall the letter and what he wrote and thanked me for the letter I sent him.

My HC at the university where I was an assistant, was so impressed with him and his recollection, as was I. Besides being a HOF coach, he is a wonderful man and he will always be one of my favorite coaches, along with Coach Richardson and Coach Self.
