Texas Tech basketball coach Tubby Smith is reportedly a strong candidate for the University of Memphis' vacant head coaching position.
USA Today writer Dan Wolken tweeted this morning that Smith "is indeed someone Memphis is strongly considering for its head coaching position."
Shortly after Wolken's tweet, CBS Sports' Gary Parrish reported Smith is "now at the top of a short list of attainable candidates Memphis is considering," citing a source.
Wolken, in an early afternoon story, reported that Memphis has had "significant contact" with Smith and that the coach has told Texas Tech officials he's involved with the Tigers' search.
Wolken also wrote that "it is believed he would take an offer if it is made."
Smith, 64, has spent the last three seasons at Texas Tech. He was the head coach at Minnesota from 2007-2013, a stint in which he recruited and coached Memphis-area products Andre Hollins (White Station) and Austin Hollins (Germantown).
Smith, of course, is most famously known for guiding Kentucky to a national championship in 1998. He led the Wildcats to a 263–83 record and several deep NCAA tournament runs, including three other Elite Eight appearances from 1997-2007.
Smith began his Division 1 head coaching career at Tulsa (1991-95), where he guided the Golden Hurricane to back-to-back Sweet 16 appearances in 1994 and 1995. From there, he spent two seasons at Georgia (1995-97) before taking over at Kentucky.
