TULSA, Okla. –– The Tulsa football team closed out preseason camp on Saturday morning with a scrimmage in which the defensive unit stole the show today, but as for the entirety of camp head coach Philip Montgomery has been pleased.
"We've had a good camp. We're at the point I want us to be. Obviously today, offensively we didn't perform the way I wanted to perform and the defense played extremely well." said Montgomery.
"The defense looked great today. They came out and played with a lot of urgency and got some momentum early," said Montgomery. "I've been talking about the secondary guys and how good they've been, and it was a good day to highlight that part of it. I was really impressed defensively how our guys flew around, created turnovers and made big stops.
Tulsa's defense had interceptions from Keanu Hill, TieNeal Martin, Cooper Edmiston, Zaven Collins, Akayleb Evans and McKinley Whitfield. Hill, Martin and Whitfield returned their picks for touchdowns.
The momentum a team gets can be contagious, and that was certainly true for the Tulsa defensive unit.
"It can be contagious," said Montgomery. "You have to do a better job offensively of rewriting the narrative. With the scrimmage like it is (blowing a quick whistle), in the run game there can be a run you think may get a little more that you're not getting the yardage out of that."
"You have to take the good and bad out of the scrimmage. We saw some really good things today on both sides. Obviously, I thought the defense played extremely well. Offensively, I'm obviously disappointed the way we played especially at the quarterback position," added Montgomery.
Quarterbacks Seth Boomer and Luke Skipper each had touchdown passes, Boomer covering 60 yards to Keenen Johnson and Skipper 17 yards to Cole Neph.
"When it comes to camp, you've gone against each other all this time, and you're going to have good days and bad days.," said Montgomery. "Honestly, this is probably our first bad day offensively of fall camp. It will be a good tape for us to learn off of and continue to grow and get better."
Classes begin Monday at Tulsa and the Hurricane will return to the practice field on Tuesday in preparation for the Sept. 1 opener against the UCA Bears at H.A. Chapman Stadium.
