Remember Solyndra and the accompanying abuse poured out on this board? At the time I tried to make two points which of course went no where even though it is basically investment 101:
1) Private investors, such as VC's, who invest in new technologies use a portfolio strategy to mitigate their risk. IOW they invest in multiple projects because they know that a majority will fail but the those that do not will result in above average returns. The failure of any single project doesn't determine the overall result. IOW one Google success can outweigh a bunch of failures that you never heard of.
2) The government made loans to Solyndra along side a lot of private equity partners who were willing to invest to make a profit.
As the attached link shows the government loan portfolio that invested in Solyndra and other projects produced a $5B+ profit.
You will not hear about that on Fox or evidently the Washington Post.
