Remember Solyndra and the accompanying abuse poured out on this board? At the time I tried to make two points which of course went no where even though it is basically investment 101:

1) Private investors, such as VC's, who invest in new technologies use a portfolio strategy to mitigate their risk. IOW they invest in multiple projects because they know that a majority will fail but the those that do not will result in above average returns. The failure of any single project doesn't determine the overall result. IOW one Google success can outweigh a bunch of failures that you never heard of.
2) The government made loans to Solyndra along side a lot of private equity partners who were willing to invest to make a profit.

As the attached link shows the government loan portfolio that invested in Solyndra and other projects produced a $5B+ profit.
You will not hear about that on Fox or evidently the Washington Post.

Loan portfolio makes a profit

Interesting...and good news if true. Do you have a direct link to the breakdown on the ROR? Asking because $5B in interest on a loan portfolio which includes it's share of losses in less than a 5 year period sounds like a very large number considering the short time frame and low interest rates.

"Turns out, a few years later, the United States DOE is expecting to generate $5-6 billion back from this same program, according to a report by Business Week."

I'm expecting a check from Publishers Clearinghouse any day.

it still didn't hurt that the major players in Solindra were bundlers for the DNC. And a large amount of said loan made it into a certain Princeps' re-election campaign.

The attached link does not show what you say it does. As TUME points out, it says that the portfolio is expected, by the people who made the investing decisions, to show a profit. Pure ideological BS.

Thanks!
