Should Memphis Cut Ties with Pastner Now ?

This guy pays him more respect than most. I'm guessing an attempt to soften the blow, as much as that can be done. I say get him out the door, otherwise they are going to be out 10 million +800,000 + whatever else can come of destroying more of the house that Calipari built. You don't want it to reach a point of no return, which is possible.

Pastner fires back:

"I would like to Freedom of Information Act The CA and see since Calkins has been columnist how much their numbers have gone down."

That's so Pastner. I hope he tries to FOIA them. Hell, I kind of want to go to Memphis now just to troll him. He's just as good at law as playing and coaching basketball.

A man attempting to defend himself in a situation where there is no defense. He is desperately clinging to desperation. His ego just can't handle quietly walking away a rich man.

Pastner has done this to himself. Recruit tons of talent and get classes that are pretty highly regarded nationally and in the conference...and to have this kind of performance. He is a #2 assistant at best in terms of coaching x's and o's, but he is an A+ recruiter. Everyone sees it. Heck, I would not even take a chance on him as a HC at a MVC school.

If he is relieved of his position, will he still be able to receive his salary if he accepts another head coaching position elsewhere? I assume he would, but I'm not privy to how all that contract stuff works.

If they fired him today, there is a 10 million contract buy out. That number gets lower the longer they dont fire him. If they fired him, it would be the most a coach has ever been paid to leave a program in College basketball history. And I Believe it maybe the 2nd highest if compared to football.

Should pastner be fired? Hell Yes.. Will they? I dunno, as they will need get boosters to help pay him to leave then come up with money to try and hirer another coach... Pastner and his lawyer did a hell of a job on that contract for pastner.
Im a UC fan, and if UC for some reason wanted to fire Coach Cronin after this season, it would only cost them 2.4 million. Which is a lot but seems like nothing compared to Pastner

Any AAC team could hire him as an assistant for a million a year to recruit and probably get several of those McDonald's All-Americans. I think his best job is to be the highest paid assistant in the country and be happy doing what he does best.

I agree but will his ego let him do that? There will be teams that want to hire him as their HC because he's such a great recruiter.

He's from Houston, right? I think Rice would be a great place for him!!!!!

Travis Ford's contract buyout at OKState is fairly high as well, somewhat close to the 10.6M it would take to buy out Pastner. OkState fans hate that contract and hate the fact that TBoone's hedge fund has lost a ton of value due to low oil prices so they are claiming poverty in why they can't buy out Travis Ford. Really, the ADs should be shown the door as well for getting the schools stuck in such a crappy contract.

If TU has an opening maybe Haith could hire Pastner as a recruiting assistant coach!

That contract is even worse than the hideous abomination that Bubba tied us to with Wojick. He does something slightly good and extend him for 7 years. What a joke that was.

He has hired three previous head coaches. But we have no openings. I would not be surprised to see ESPN grab him for a year.

Yes, Pastner is a great recruiter. But as the Memphis program gets more mediocre every year, he will not be able to attract McD AA's any more. So they will have bad coaching with average talent. Things will get worse very quickly if they keep him.

Must admit, I do enjoy seeing the Memphis program turn into a dumpster fire. Almost as much as I will enjoy the same thing for SMU in a couple of years.

A kids show? How about a show based on the 1960's where a young man learns about life? They could call it "The Wonder Years."

It's only fair that Memphis have their own JP.
Bro, nothing quite approaches that. At least Pastner knows D-1 talent and could get them on campus. JP was handing out D-1 scholarships to kids that would have struggled in NAIA competition. I have witnessed many a time when a D-1 kid would be on campus and Pooh and Kwanza were trying to get the kid to commit before sitting down with JP because they knew that was the kiss of death.

Pastner can get the kids to commit, but x's and o's are his struggle when the overall talent is not enough to win the game. Calipari is going to start running into similar resentment at Kentucky. When the refurbished Fab 5 show up every year and they underachieve as FR and then go straight to the NBA. You think Pastner is underachieving? Calipari has 3-5 lottery picks on his team every year...anything short of a Final Four/Nat'l Championship is underachieving for that level of talent.

Guh lawdy, man. Quit taking things so literal. And don't you think I know ALL OF THAT AND THEN SOME already?
