SENIOR DAY Tulsa vs Cincy Womens basketball

Cincy is pounding it inside, Tulsa hitting shots and doing a decent job of attacking the paint off the drive. So far it's the Wyvette show but the offense is moving well and has a nice mix of shots they are getting. Rebounding will be big. Tulsa so far solid blocking out, Cincy is just banging around but Tulsa has got an over the back call. It will be a grind. Good coach at Cincy, our zone has been a big problem and helped our team against the post. Cincy entering from the top of the key is limiting help as is a corner opposite of the post who then cuts block to block for the entry

1Q 4:58
Cincy 12
Tulsa 10

Tulsa has more fga and is out rebounding Cincy. Shooting is off a little but better than it has been. Cincy is really attacking Tulsa's defense well, better than just about anyone else I have seen. Tulsa is being super disciplined on rebounding though and have won their share of 50/50 ones, a couple bounces have also gone Tulsa's way which has led to the TU advantage.

Listening to the ESPN+ lots of talk about the number of injuries Tulsa has had and that they are just trying to struggle to the finish line with even major players (Lascay and Lewis) have been playing through some tough ones only practicing half the time. Evan's having another good game.

2Q 10:00
Cincy 18
Tulsa 20

Cincy starts with a 9-2 run to start the 2Q, Lascay gets a nice bucket and some good defense turns Cincy over who is shooting 50%. Tulsa gets a good shot, a rebound and follow but misses. That's four or five "bunnies" Tulsa has gone cold on, will have to start getting those to stay in control of the game. Back and forth game, pretty entertaining at the moment, good flow and plays made from both sides. Cincy has caught up in rebounding.

2Q 4:45

Tulsa goes cold from the field. Lots of scrap and hustle to get baskets. Cincy is hot, they have a girl who is shooting lights out. Hand in her face for the first two she made today, the third was a nice set up to get her open, her fourth of the half came off some nice movement and solid patience for a good shot.

Hrafnkelsdottir had knee surgery and that is why we haven't seen her. Bittle's missed time and limited minutes in the early season had to do with a rib. Other girls with lots of nagging injuries. ESPN+ guys have discussed this, our lack of height, and the need for a third scorer.

I like our radio guy and his call but Tulsa tends not to talk much about those sort of things and he doesn't bring up any detail really.

Cincy's hot shooting gives them a lead at half. Even rebounding which is a good sign.

Halftime

Great halftime spot on Jillian Robbins. She was a lot if fun to watch play. Some good highlights and quotes in there. McConnell-Miller and Poingonis talk about Robbins playing days. Mossman reflects on what she means for the program and how they use her in recruiting today.

Jillian talks about what the program meant to her and how she was proud to help establish a tradition after the break Tulsa had without women's basketball.

Really good piece overall.

Mia is on fire and drags Tulsa's offense back up, they have started making shots, tulsa still getting over the back/fouls on rebounds with great positioning. Attacking the paint with cuts and drives. Cincy is staying in front off their hot outside shooter. Tulsa has switched to a man to man, maybe first time this game, definitely a lot more than the 1st half. Tulsa has also got some transition which helped jump start the offense and set up the drives and cuts.

3Q 4:44
Cincy 38
Tulda 32

Refs are letting both teams be more physical. Tulsa is switching defenses up now and has done pretty well although the zone has dropped a couple baseline cutters for easy buckets. That's the stretch and attention caused by the shooter for Cincy, Tulsa has to stop that though to effectively use the zone. Tulsa is in the bonus on free throws but needs to shoot better there and from the floor. Tulsa is rebounding really well considering size difference.

3Q 1:08
Cincy 49
Tulsa 44

Missed opportunity, Tulsa with a good stop on the shot clock violation. Offensive set is active but doesn't really get anything out of it. Wyvette gets the ball with six seconds left to shoot, forces a jump shot (nothing else available), Lascay gets her hands on the rebound bouncing around a couple times, good outlet pass and an attack by the Cincy player gets them a lay up as the quarter expires.

4Q 10:00
Cincy 51
Tulsa 44

Cincy has switched to a sinking zone to eliminate cuts and contain drives, Tulsa again struggling to make shots has lead to it being very effective. After some frustrating possesions Tulsa picks up the pace and attacks the zone early leading to some break downs and a few important buckets. Offensively though Cincy is getting what it wants and on the one sequence they didn't snagged a couple rebounds to get the basket anyway. The lead has grown after a very back and forth game. Smart time out by Mossman, need a couple easy baskets and a couple stops to get back in it.

4Q 6:38
Cincy 59
Tulsa 48

Tulsa ball.

I just don't know what to say. Tulsa has six pretty good shots in a row over three possesions giving Cincy only one shot over that time and could not make any of them as all in and out or bounced on the rim. Followed by a couple free throws for Cincy and a missed lay up by TU. Just tough. Cincy back to the line for two more points.

4Q 3:29
Cincinnati 63
Tulsa 51

Lewis with a few more in close misses, some in and out jump shots mixed in end Tulsa's chances. Couple late baskets finish slightly better than it was not as good as it should have been. Overall Tulsa had eight or nine 4-6ft shots that you just have to make. It made that soft zone very effective when Cincy first widened the lead to double digits. The post player for Cincinnati is an in game clinic on positioning, footwork, and finishing, she also shoots 80% from the line. Cincinnati shot well but it was predominately on finishing around the basket that the difference was made.

Just as an example Tulsa had 68 fga to Cincinatti's 54, but made four fewer baskets. Tulsa was only outrebounded by one, won the turnovers by three, and had five fewer assists because of the missed shots.

Tulsa has now become a competitive team that finishes with losses after bad shooting fourth quarters. Some of that is simply fatigue. Also of note, Lascay is our only senior, already working on her masters it seems unclear whether or not she will return, everyone else should be back and we are quite young this year overall. No Clayton today (freshman post) and I didn't see her on our bench so she may be dealing with an injury as well.

It's very possible Mossman will not be the coach next year, even so she will leave a lot of talent here if the new coach can keep them. Bittle continues to be the swiss army knife of players. The Mayberrys are difference makers at every facet of the game, their biggest negative is being a little small, which hurts particularly with out a good post. Hrafnkelsdottir looked like she had made some nice improvements before the injury. Evans is clearly a prime time player, her game should continue to progress and become even more dangerous. Clayton has shown some signs that she can be an effective post and hopefully will have a nice freshman to sophmore jump that will see her earning consistent time. The other players are adequate for spot mins. Lewis is a decent 4 who will do the dirty work. If Lascay stays, really a nice JC or transfer post would make this team very difficult to deal with, going probably eight or maybe even nine deep if a spot player can consistently fill a need.

It may be and it's hard to argue no if she is an option that we can get. I love her as a coach and philosophically how her teams play. While this year has been late 4Q game collapses, weird because of covid, injuries, etc a lot of these problems are not new unique to this season.

Bla pointed out it's been rare to see a complete game from a TU team since joining the AAC. If we do make a change as I said I think we are one good post player from being a very good team.

Cincinnati will be better next year and Temple will likely be too. Plus it looks like four bids for the AAC this year with Houston upsetting USF today. It will be a tough league for the foreseeable future a complete rebuild will be tough. Getting a team with enough core talent to compete will really help out any new coach.

Also as an added little shout out to our senior.

Mrs Lascay is a 4.0 student in graduate school as well as being a team leader and a pretty damn good player. Her attitude always seems positive and she has quite the competitive drive.

She has been awesome representative for the university. If this is her last game at the Reynolds center I wish it would have come with more fans to have shown the appreciation Lascay earned over her outstanding career.
