Post-Spring Analysis -- TU Quarterbacks

I really enjoyed Larry's story on the QB's. We now have a coach that has tons of experience coaching QB's and offenses. I like how he talked about the strengths and weaknesses of each QB and what he has each working on to improve. And I especially like how the QB's are taking to the instruction. It appears each has a lot of work ahead. Hopefully we can see marked improvement, enough to put some good QB's on the field this fall.

Thanks, Bill. I think the QB's will excel in this system. I expect Evans to put up some big numbers.

I think most fans know that Evans has a pretty good arm, but he has some issues as in not being very adept with his accuracy and having mobility problems. Thankfully those are now being addressed. By the time fall gets here he will be looking like a different QB. In fact all the QB's should be much better.

One of the 1st thing Monty worked with Evans in was his footwork which was probably 60% of his accuracy issue. Even in the Spring game you could tell it was better

I expected footwork was a large part of his problem too often when he was throwing his legs would be splayed out. Not really in balance. He could be seen sometimes throwing off his back foot. when he did at you could count on a turnover at times. Looked like he had never been taught proper technique. With Coach Monty in the fold most of that ought to be rectified.

Dane's always reminded me of a less mobile GJ. The mechanics weren't always spot on... but most of the time he did well enough to succeed. If Dane can progress in a similar fashion to GJ... we might be in for some FFPF. (FUN FAST PHYSICAL FOOTBALL)

Since we are coming into August here shortly and almost a month away from the start of the season, has Monty decided on Evans or do we know yet? Is calcagni going to be his backup again? Are they going to redshirt president? Has anyone else noticed that we have a TON of quarterbacks?

When I talked with Monty, although he wouldn't give anyone the position, I think it was clear that Evans is going to the quarterback. Calcagni looks like the clear number 2. Although, I think he is smart enough to go with another number 2 if Evans is injured and it is not working for Calcagni.

It seemed clear to me that during the spring game, Evans had improved dramatically. It was also clear that the drop off from him to other qb's was dramatic. I believe that one of the two freshman coming in(Burgess & Hefley), both of which had stellar prep careers, will become #2 behind Dane. TU Football: 1st,last,always!

I believe u are referring to President and Hefley, Burgess has been with us for a season.

too true, G$. I forgot that Burgess had that off the field "issue". Still, if the kid's head is now on straight-he's got talent & could beat out Hefley for 2nd string. President has a lot of learning to do & will be a year or two away.

Burgess was dressed for the Spring game but didn't get any reps from what I remember. I wonder if he will get an honest look from the staff. I think President's best opportunity will come if he RS this season. The speed of the game seemed to overwhelm him a bit. We'll see if that holds true for Hefley as well. I think you'll see Calcagni as #2 for the first part of the season and another veal made after preseason camp (can't really call them 2-a-days anymore since so few schools actually run 2 practices opting for conditioning and additional film/scheme sessions instead.
