TULSA, Okla. –– The University of Tulsa men’s basketball team and the ALS Association of Oklahoma are teaming up to host the Tulsa Hoops for ALS Scrimmage this Saturday, Oct. 16, at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Tipoff is set for 3 p.m., with free admission, and donations to help fight ALS are accepted throughout the contest.

The conclusion of the Golden Hurricane football team’s game against South Florida will air on the video board for fans entering the arena.

“We are hosting this event because for the past couple of years, Covid has forced The Walk to Defeat ALS to go virtual,” head coach Frank Haith said, “This scrimmage allows us to put our own little spin on the event and team up with a great organization to fight this terrible disease.”

Every 90 minutes someone in the United States is diagnosed with ALS. Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Eventually, people with ALS lose the ability to initiate and control muscle movement, which often leads to total paralysis and death within two to five years of diagnosis. For unknown reasons, veterans are more likely to develop ALS than the general population. There is currently no known cause or cure.

“The Tulsa Walk to Defeat ALS, in partnership with Tulsa Hoops for ALS, is the number one way to unite and fundraise for those living with ALS,” Sharan Catalano, manager of events and fundraising at ALS Oklahoma, said. “Each year, fundraising through the Walk drives bold and urgent innovation as we march together toward a cure for ALS. The strength of ALS support shines through on Walk Day as we honor those affected by ALS and raise critical funds to advance research, care, and advocacy for the ALS community. The ALS Association Oklahoma provides patients and caregivers — at no cost — with one-on-one home visits, resources, respite care, equipment loan, augmentative communication and assistive technology programs, as well as nutritional supplements, care grants and emergency assistance.”

Tulsa will host a livestream of the scrimmage for fans unable to attend. Fans can donate digitally through the University of Tulsa men’s basketball fundraising page: TulsaHurricane.com/ALSwalk.
