Official HC Speculation Thread

I asked AI for a list, here’s what it came up with:

Graham Harrell (Current Purdue OC) - Has strong Texas ties from his playing days at Texas Tech and previous coaching stops. His Air Raid offense would fit well in the AAC.

Jeff Lebby (Current Mississippi State Head Coach) - Former Oklahoma OC with deep ties to the region. If he were to leave MSU, Tulsa could be a good landing spot.

Brennan Marion (Current UNLV OC) - Rising star offensive coordinator who has Oklahoma ties from his time at Oklahoma State. Known for his innovative "Go-Go" offense.

Brian Urlacher (Former Texas Tech RB coach, current UTSA OC) - Deep Texas recruiting ties and experience in the region.

K.C. Keeler (Sam Houston State HC) - Proven winner at multiple levels who has successfully transitioned SHSU to FBS.

Major Applewhite (Current South Alabama OC) - Former Houston head coach with G5 experience and regional recruiting ties.

Josh Heupel's coaching tree could also be worth exploring, given his successful tenure at Tulsa as OC (2014-2015).

I didn’t realize Marion spent time at OSU and Heupel as OC at Tulsa. And Purdue is 1-10 this year. That’s AI for you.

Wow, so Josh Heupel was our undercover OC, and Norwood really was just a front. Did Heupel calle the plays that first year?

It also claimed Brian Urlacher is OC at UTSA. As far as I know the only Brian Urlacher in football is the hall of famer Bears LB.

Harrell maybe, no to Lebby (isn't he still tied to Briles?), Marion- given, yes to interview the Sam Houston coach, yes to Applewhite.

Longshot but we should at least talk to Bobby Babich, Bills DC. Ties to Tulsa/TU, played at North Dakota State.

ChatGPT gave me this nonsense -

The University of Tulsa’s search for a new head football coach has identified several potential candidates, with a mix of internal options, regional connections, and proven coaching talent from smaller programs. Here is a list of some of the names being discussed:

1. G.J. Kinne - Head coach at Incarnate Word and a former Tulsa quarterback. Known for his offensive-minded approach and success in the FCS playoffs.

2. Ryan Switzer - Interim head coach at Tulsa and current wide receivers coach. Switzer might be considered for continuity.

3. Steve Spurrier Jr. - Tulsa’s offensive coordinator, who brings a wealth of experience and could be promoted internally.

4. Ron Burton - Tulsa’s assistant head coach and defensive line coach, with a strong coaching pedigree.

5. Corey Dennis - Tulsa’s passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach, with ties to prominent programs like Ohio State.

The search will likely include other candidates with experience leading smaller programs or those with ties to Oklahoma and surrounding regions.

GJ is the answer, good chance he can bring Marion with him and probably a couple other young coaches

And before anyone says we can't get him, plenty of you thought we couldn't fire Kdub or wouldn't fire him before the end of the season. We go get GJ and the program will be in good hands.

I think he'd for sure be bringing Dexter McCoil with him.

I'm still completely blown away that we fired him. When was the last time we fired a coach more or less when he deserved it? For BB it was Phillips in 2004 and for FB, Blankenship in 2014, tho both of them probably should have gone a year earlier. Our usual MO has been to get to the point the coach should get fired and then give him another 3 or 4 years. Wojick, Montgomery, Haith. This feels like a major change in our approach.

Good to know you are forever delusional. Keep hope on Kinne, who will not even interview for the job.

He is above our price bracket to pull him away from his present job. He already has a headstart to getting a p5 job, would likely have less nil to work with, have academic handcuffs compared to Texas St, and we would have to pay Wilson's exit fee + Kinne's entry fee.

I imagine Marion would be less interested in working as his OC, seeing as how his job now is OC at a higher level job than Texas St, and is more successful. The whole thing will never happen.

I would love to see Milkman myself, but Dane Evans and Nick Graham are intriguing to me as well. Would love to see Coach Switzer and Coach Spurrier Jr. maintain a contributing role.

This one might get some laughs/gripes. 🤣

HC/LB - Joe Gillespie
OC/QB - Chad Morris
DC (by title only)/Jacks - Luke Olsen
OL - Justin Morsey
RB - Spurrier Jr.
WR - Switzer
TE - I got nothin.
DL - Tre’Von Biglow (sounds like a DL coach name)
DB - Keenan Reed
S - Sam Blankenship (only because of the last name)

Gillespie won’t be the HC and Chad won’t be OC.

Of the current staff keeping Switzer and Franks would be really positive for continuity, player retention and recruiting. I think Spurrier would as well but that is highly unlikely at this point unless we hire the old Ball Coach with the promise JR is HC in waiting - not happening!

Exactly. That list was all in fun.

I know Gillespie won’t come back to college for the next 4 years, unless it is one hell of an offer, and is in Texas or OK since the grandkids are still in OK.

The others were just making a goofy list.

Milkman is at the top of my list. Kinne would be interesting but with the last realignment Sun Belt to AAC is really a lateral move. He might be interested, and I’m sure we’ll know if he is, but it could be a stretch.

From there we can go all over the place. We need to stay away from a retread and look for an up and comer. Kragthorpe and Graham represent the most success we have had in years and neither had been a HC before.

Hoping Brad brings the same approach to the search as he has done for everything else.

Graham was head coach one year at Rice, before TU.

You don’t have any idea what TU’s price is.

Yes I do, it's around 2M, which is what he makes there. Besides I said price bracket. Bracket means what it would take pull him away would be well over 2m. He won't come here for 2.125m. it would take an offer of 2.5m or more is my guess. And that is above what TU is willing to pay as far as I know.

Well, you’re wrong. I get a kick out of people that speak in absolutes without having facts. It’s a good guess on your part, but it’s wrong.

I put several figures out there, which one is wrong?

There is only one area that gets mushy. I figure they are willing to pay 1.8-2.35M. It gets mushy(for him & us) around 2.35-2.4m, as far as what he would accept to start over at TU, and whether they would go that high, with other incentives.

I’m just saying you are wrong about how high TU will go. This isn’t your big brother’s admin anymore and quite frankly the president has more power than ever before. If they need to go up to $2.5 to get Kinne, they will. Now, whether that would be enough to make him jump, I don’t know.
