no wonder why we are losing

Says the guy exhibiting some of the poorest basic math & English skills amongst posters. Guess it takes familiarity with the problem to recognize the need. Not.

lowering the standard does not produce quality
Standardized high stakes testing does not actually measure proficiency in any given subject. Teachers should not be forced to teach things just so kids can pass a test. Kids need to be taught how to think critically through a problem and teachers should be teaching them techniques for math and reading and how to apply them in every day life. And when was the last time you looked at one of these tests? The questions are ****ing ridiculous and 1/2 the questions in the reading comprehension section are designed to trick the kids. There's no reason for that type of crap on a test for 3rd graders to see if they can read.

There are better ways to evaluate a child's proficiency and it's best left to the teacher as each student has a different level.

and just where will they develop these skills.

it will be difficult to find a good job if you cant read, write and do math
But who needs a job in a socialist system. the government will provide.

add, subtract, multiply and divide

pretty hard concepts. and testing can be tricky!

You're an idiot. If it was that simple most of the kids would pass easily. When was the last time you read through one of these tests? If you haven't done it in the last year or two keep your trap shut. I have because my kids (who both test out at 95% or above) always get frustrated with some of the stupid problems because the problems are testing concepts, they're trying to trick the kids.

Add subtract multiply divide. Fractions, percentages, logarithms, exponentials, solving linear equations, solving quadratic equations, probability, geometry, square roots, negative numbers, imaginary numbers.

Then if you’re good enough you can do differential and integral calculus and deal with some infinite series at the end of your HS career.

I watch the majority of idiots on facebook who try to solve simple problems and can't because they don't understand PEMDAS

many graduates cant even do this simple math.

There are many, many kids at TU who are excellent at not just arithmetic, algebra, and geometry but also calculus long before they get to college.

Heck, I knew a kid at BA who was so far ahead in Math that he was taking math courses at TU as a HS junior.
