Most everyone on this site knows this guy. He is my father and he might kill me for this but I am posting it anyway. He was stricken and hospitalized on 4 June with Guilian Barre syndrome. He is still in the ICU and is starting to get some movement in his hands. He is a die hard TU fan both basketball and football. Just wanted to let you know.

Thanks for letting us know. His posting always brightens up a sometimes negative board. All of us wish him the best and I know the TU family is together in prayers for him. Give him my best regards and quick get well wishes.

Glad to hear he is improving. His posts were so enthusiastic and energetic that I pegged him as someone in his early 40s. All the best to him; we need him posting again.

Any updates? I've been doing some research on his illness. Under 20,000 cases a year. With proper treatment the symptoms can be suppressed and he can make a full recovery. That's exactly our prayers--to make a full recovery and be back cheering on the Hurricane. Nevada's a great fan and we're all praying and pulling for him. He's around the age of me and many on this board and we're all tough old codgers.

There are two treatments that they can do with him 1 giving him immunoglobulin. That did not work. It actually made it worse. 2 plasmapheresis which is a week long plasma exchange. He finished that Wednesday and the nurse has stated that he has hit what they say is a plateau. He isn't getting worse and he isn't getting better. They had him in a coma during this process. When they woke him he is able to blink and slight movements in his hands but very slight. He continues to be I tubated for the next week. Still in ICU but looks stable enough to move out of ICU. If after the next week he is the same then they will actually put in a trach instead of intubating him to lessen the wear on his throat. Since I'm in Virginia getting ready to retire from the military I have to stay here for right now.

I get daily updates from his wife or my sister who is a registered nurse who speaks directly with the staff so she can explain it all to me in English. Lol. This is a complete shock to all of us. My sister has stated that she is hopeful after talking to the doctors that he will recover but the question is how long will it take his body to heal itself in its weakened state. He is a good dude. Not because he is my father but he is a genuine person and tells it like it is. We talk a lot from August through April going over the message boards and how we think the teams are doing. During this time is what I call our blackout time. Lol. We live on opposite sides of the country but we still share a passion for TU.

I do appreciate the kind words from the staff and the members. Even though I don't share your opinion most time. Lol. I will keep posting if something happens. Thanks again guys

Update: He has been moved out of the ICU but to a lower tier of care below the ICU however has developed a staff infection in his lungs. Because of this they should be putting in a trach soon and removing the tube in hopes to clear the infection and hopefully to where he can take regular breaths.

Thanks for the update and continue prayers for a recovery.

Guilian Barre syndrome is very tough. Being in his 60's he has a much better chance than someone 10 - 20 yrs older. The older you are the tougher it is to overcome. Hopefully you can celebrate some small successes and those steps continue to build without encountering a major setback. Make sure you and your family stay strong and healthy as possible while supporting your dad.

Dad took a turn for the worst late last week developing a severe infection and a high fever and they were puzzled on how to deal with it. They had to call in the infectious disease crew to look at him. I received word today that they got him on a new antibiotic and that his fever is gone and that his ventilation numbers are starting to decrease which is a good thing. Hopefully soon he will be able to come off the vent and start physical therapy to hopefully get some feeling back into his extremities.

UPDATE: they have lowered his oxygen intake and taken him off of the knockout drugs. He can shrug his shoulders and move his head and can respond by nodding or shaking his head. He can feel people touch him but still can not move anything else. The infections are gone and it looks like everything is going in the right direction. He is still on the vent with the trach still in his neck and I am being told he can feel pain. Things are looking up in Nevada and hopefully within the next month or so he has a lot more improvement. Doc is saying they are setting a timeline for him to be better in 6 months. I am assuming they mean recovered by that time. Only time will tell.

Thanks for the updates. We're continuing to pray for our fellow TU fan and hope things continue to improve.
