Report: SMU’s Larry Brown in trouble with NCAA, could face ‘lack of coach control’ charge

EJ Holland

SMU basketball coach Larry Brown is facing a “lack of coach control” charge,
This comes a month after SMU went before the NCAA Committee on Infractions last month for a hearing related to serious allegations against the men’s basketball and golf programs.

The report states Brown’s potential charge is related to former SMU assistant coach Ulric Maligi and a basketball secretary in allegedly assisting sophomore shooting guard Keith Frazier with coursework.

Frazier was deemed “academically ineligible” in January 2015 and missed the rest of the season. Maligi took an indefinite leave from the program that same month.

It should be noted that Maligi was also the lead recruiter for Frazier, who was the focus of a DISD investigation regarding changed grades. A Kimball product, Frazier was a five-star recruit and McDonald’s All-American.

At issue with Brown is what he knew about Frazier’s situation, and what he did about it, according to the report. In recent case precedent, the NCAA has suspended head coaches for multiple games.

This is the third time Brown has had his program face major NCAA charges. After previous infractions at UCLA and Kansas, both of those programs were hit with major sanctions.

Brown’s record at SMU is 69-34. The Hall of Famer helped SMU reach the NCAA tournament for the first time since 1993 last season.

Perhaps they will announce the probation before the start of conference season. The league might want to ban SMU from the conference tournament to avoid having the winner be ineligible for the NCAA.

One less bid to the NCAA - bad for AAC. One NCAA game and no wins for Brown - good for everyone and yet another lesson (forgotten repeatedly) for SMU - can't buy wins by cheating.

Pretty serious stuff. If you recall, Tubbs (not Billy's) got them in trouble prior to hiring Robo-doh. Every time they get close to being good, this happens.

I think Wojcik would be a good coach for them.

Actually, you most certainly can buy wins by cheating. SMU was doomed to an eternity of irrelevance. They were relevant in the 80's for football and they were somewhat relevant last year in basketball and may be again this year as a result of questionable tactics. If you were an SMU fan, I am certain you would say the right things about integrity, etc. but I am also certain you would enjoy the hell out of those winning seasons.

I will be shocked if any of the assistant coaches roll over on ole Larry. SMU will get a one year ban and lose a ship and Larry will get a few harsh words from the NCAA. Meanwhile, SMU keeps bringing in top talent.

Pony is the only school to get the death penalty in a sport. Perhaps it should happen again.

Plausible deniability.

Actually I think it is important to make sure the distinction is made that this is not a "lack of institutional control" charge from what I've read, but Brown will face a "failure to monitor" charge instituted to hold coaches accountable for what happens within their program with or without direction from the head coach. I replied here because Fan posted "Plausible deniability" which can no longer be an excuse the head coach can use...the NCAA is essentially saying the head coach is responsible for every aspect of his/her program and they are not exempt from academic wrongdoing carried about as instructed from a manager. Brown is screwed...Calipari will be screwed.

True......Although this is his third offense, and in some respects the most blatant, he will
get something more than just a slap on the wrist, and everything will be deemed OK.....
He (via his assistants) has always recruited on the edge (or just over), and mostly gotten
away with it.......His team is a good one, and because of a great point guard, and lots of
inside strength, will prob. win the regular season AAC championship.....

We seem to be headed for the 3-4 slot (optimistic) with a very experienced team that Haith
has sadly not added to in any substantial way........Enjoy this one though.....It may be quite
a while before we see the top 4-5 again......

Very good basketball in the AAC....And possibly getting better....I hope we can remain
part of the upper tier.......After this season, that seems very problematical......At best, we
seem to be recruiting at a conf. USA level....Certainly not at an AAC level....:(

I actually agree.

Until after 1st semester unless Brown continues to have someone doing his classwork, which is sort of why he's in a bit of trouble right now.

If Calvin gets run for texting players, somehow it only make sense that Larry get the same for his blatant disregard of the eligibility rules. Brown's history of NCAA infractions are spread over a greater period of time, but are every bit worse than what Calvin allowed to happen at OU and IU.

I would imagine the quickest way to turn a doormat into a Top 25 program is to find ways to get elite players into school. I hope the NCAA is closely monitoring the players who reporting passing grades, I doubt the players are staying eligible on their own merit.

Shortly after Frazier was shelved, another player suddenly quits, presumably also over academic eligibility.

If the NCAA let's Brown off the hook, any chance the AAC could punish him?

The cadaver Brown should be gone by the start of basketball season.

Will be interesting to finally see the NCAA's findings. If Frazier was found to have been illegally ushered to SMU, it would be an absolute travesty that he would be allowed to ever play at SMU.

It seems like finding playing time is not going to be his issue, but rather keeping kids academically eligible. I'm kind of surprised Brown came away with such a good class under such scrutiny.

Interestingly enough, CBS Sports just tweeted out a Larry Brown quote that "he could fix the Sixers in 5 minutes". As in NBA Sixers. Is Larry trying to get back into the NBA? Get another school in trouble and cut and run.

I saw that too. It was hilarious, considering he couldn't fix the Bobcats in 2 years. In fact, they went 9-19 before he was fired.
