I heard from a fellow TU fan that Hines was on the radio on Friday with Pat Jones. Apparently Pat Jones gave the only "pro TU " partof the conversation. She said we were exposed & would've lost by 40 if UCONN didn't put in subs. Jones countered with Shaq's ankle & Ray's knee & she dismissed that. He felt Hines had a very low opinion of our team.

Hines may be a decent reporter, but the best TU basketball articles & most favorable TU comments this season have come from USA Today, NBC Sports, Andy Katz & Dick Vitale, NOT from our Tulsa World beat writer, Kelly Hines. That is highly unusual.

She's not very good, dude. I'm just not impressed with anything from that sports page since Peters came on. Bring back Strain!!!

I totally agree we sucked on Thursday, but when PAT JONES is defending TU with our own beat writer, that's just odd. Hines has been very, very objective towards TU, I'll give her that.

Again, the best, most informative, most positive TU comments & articles I've read & heard on TU basketball have come from national sources. That is something new for Tulsa athletics. That may be the AAC exposure helping us. On the bright side, that should also help Haith with our national basketball recruiting.

Win 12 in a row and 10 in conference and ESPN calls you the class of the American.

Lose two in a row and your beat writer trashes you.

Just remember it's never as good as it looks when you win or as bad as it looks when you lose. Beat ECU and then get back some confidence. Haith will make adjustments based on what other teams have started doing. For now, just win one at a time.

I miss Eric Bailey, that guy was great!

Hines is a step above The Scoopster...

However, I'm not sure that a step gets you out of the basement!!!

Kelly has been fine, but tends to swing positive and negative too easily.

After tonight, it's clearly a 3 team race between SMU, TU and Temple. TU is 1-1 against these teams and with a win at home vs. Temple, holding serve vs. ECU and a dangerous Tulane, is one road win at Memphis away from being an NCAA at large team.Very interesting that both Cinncy and Xavier - a fearsome crosstown rivalry hotter than our friends on South Lewis - both lost going into their Super Bowl. Root for Cinncy - it's about top 50 and AAC vs. Big East.

This arguement is so freaking painful. It's almost as painful as our outside shooting. Please tell me when it has become the newspapers responsibility to be our marketing dept?

I don't know Hines from a hole in the wall and don't listen to local radio or get the TW, so I can't comment on this particular case. But I will add this since I am on today.

History has shown me that local newspapers and radio are the marketing dept for every state school in the country. There are degrees of it, with places like Arkansas and Nebraska basically being open cheerleaders with absolutely nothing negative allowed said and every situation being spun a positive. But even if not to that degree, they are all marketing depts. to some extent.

So while you are technically correct, I can see the frustration from the fact we feel we are treated differently. I'm sure we blow it out of proportion, but that is what fans do.

Generally the beat writer is a bit of a fanboy/cheer leader. Three reasons for this: 1) they usually are a fan, 2) fans like to read things slanted in favor of their team and 3) building up the product you are reporting on is good for business.

Obviously there are times when you can't be a cheerleader and have to report critically. But to he the consistent negative voice as the beat writer even among other reporters, is unusual. You can point out problems, concerns, and issues without trolling. Our beat writer is as bad as I am after we suffer a bad defeat...

I just don't see a lot of creativity or pounding the pavement. The Deandre Wright article was great. But other than that, if you listen to the questions at the press conferences or follow the coverage, it's just not as in depth as past years. An example: two national outlets wrote stories about the biggest single story this year, Coach's sister. Maybe Coach didn't share that with her, but then again, it's her job to be in a place to get that story.

I'm not saying that she should be a cheerleader. I'm just saying its a damn shame that the coverage of this team isn't where it should be. I feel like Peters has used the same type of weak coverage that the Chronicle gives to Rice and UH. That ain't right. And if you complain, he's way too defensive.

Bailley [I think that was his name] gave you the feeling that he was on TU's side. He walked around at half time and spoke to people. His twitter account followed things happening. Was he a cheerleader? Not really but he bonded with TU for the time that he was covering it.

It's great that she's objective. I'd prefer not to have my intelligence insulted by a cheerleader that tries to put a positive spin on a beatdown like that. But it's not quite TU sports objectivity as much as it is TU sports nihilism. She has no opinion. No insight. No interest. Just get a few stock quotes and meet the bare minimum for a game story.

I think you could send her to cover the lawn bowling championships in Saskatoon and she'd show more enthusiasm than covering the TU beat.

Just wondering if the TW pays more to the beat writers covering OU/OSU and that NBA team than TU? A salary pecking order there? If so, then would it be in that writers best interest to promote some teams over others. In other words, did Bailey and Haisten get a payraise when they left the TU beat? Just a thought.

You also have to consider that she's young and female. Two handicaps in the sports world that might keep you from being so much of a homer, in order to get/build respect.

He traveled with the team a lot. I'm not sure Hines is doing that as I keep seeing "news service" TU game reports . Not sure why she is not making the trips as past beats did.

Bailey spoiled us with his coverage at TU.

Klein and Hoover provide more coverage than Hines. I'm not sure what team she covers on a regular basis, but it isn't TU.

I doubt that's her decision. Could be a Peters decision? Again, look at the Chronicle's coverage of Rice and UH and this is what you get. It's a real shame when the local paper skips out on coverage of local teams.

I think she went to UCONN. It seems like the paper is aware that there is a lot of local interest in this team, but then they do just weird things in covering it. For example, they had a video of Peters and Hines discussing the team last week. I can't imagine many people want to watch that. I think if they worked on the "notebook" articles and found some good nuggets that those of us without press credentials can't find, that would be a good start.

The Houston Comical's coverage of Rice and UH is now basically blogs.

The Astros coverage is moving that direction as well.

+1 ... TW sports section seems to be heavily weighted towards OU, The Thunder, OSU, ORU, and then Tulsa in that order!!

We get better coverage than ORU. But ORU had Trammel until he quit working for the sports page.

And I don't want to come across as totally negative. I've defended that paper for years on here. I'm happier with Hines than I was with Scoop, but that's just because Scoop at times seemed to undermine us. But there are some things they really need to improve: 1) make web site easier to read (too much crap that kills up to date browsers), 2) don't treat the private schools like they are also rans.

A lot of things would improve if they would be thorough. For example, Hoover's original article on the academic requirements did not discuss the obvious issue of peer institution requirements.

The TW has a problem right now and that problem is that the few people who actually read it are thinking about cancelling imo. The folks in charge at the TW can't understand that their most avid and loyal readers are people like us, the long time Tulsans that have read it for years. They didn't fit that into their strategy to bring back the readers they'd lost when Buffet took it over. They have a self inflicted problem they've created. Most of the folks that are in charge and produce the TW have lost touch with their readers on a variety of fronts and it may mean our local paper is going to be gone in the near future. Its unfortunate.

This is true. At least for me.

The website is a mess with all of the ads and autoplay videos and trying to view it on mobile is horrible. The mobile app is OK but not good enough for me to want to use.

The links to DOK stories are nice... if you could read them with your TW subscription but since you can't and there's no indication that it is a DOK article, it's just frustrating.

I've been on the edge of cancelling for a while and get closer every day.

I keep hoping they'll make some changes but they don't.

TU's sports page has not undergone the template change as OU and OSU have and in all of my emails to the sports editor, he has indicated he really doesn't give two craps about TU or making any changes to improve it.

Klein and Hoover have done some nice write ups but Kelly seems to be trying too hard to be objective and it comes across as more negative than objective.

While we're bitching, I'd like to see if anyone read Hoover's column yesterday about old man Sutton once again not getting into the HoF. He spent the first six inches, if not more, yapping on and on about how "tough" it must be for Scott, the son of a legend. Jesus H, who cares? He's been at ORU for about 1,000 years. It seriously can't be "tough" anymore.

And yeah, the World website absolutely, positively suck sumpin' fierce!

I'm going to assume when you said he used the first 6 inches, you were referring to what was printed in the paper?

Hey!!! Leave the dirty jokes to ole Barrister.

For instance, I would have said, "6 inches is an over-statement for Scott Sutton."

When you cancel, you'll most likely get a call from someone in the subscription dept asking why you cancelled. If you do what I did and tell them they'll have to make changes if they want your business again, they will probably tell you they'd like your input and send you a questionaire. If /when you get it, put down why you are unhappy with the TU coverage and why. Thats what I did. Maybe it'll help a little.

Hines provides zero information beyond this board as a paid subscriber.

I only keep the TW for local business news. That's it. Nothing useful there TU related that we cannot get from Chris.

Trammel was a fan of Tulsa basketball. BIG TIME fan. He loved it. How could anyone not get caught up in it back in the mid to late 90's???

The TW doesn't let her travel but to a few games on the basketball side of things. Her write ups on away games are from her watching the game the same we do and then using AP wire service reports for post game quotes from ayers and coaches and hence why the author is called "From Staff Reports". I don't feel she has been overly negative and in football she was accused of being overly sunshine pumping. No one on this board doubts that this team has some glaring holes and has has said so but she also has said this team continues to find a way to win. Nothing terrible in that. She does a better job than Haisten IMO and being her 1st yr on the beat she has some ways to reach the level EB had attained.
