Former Alto phenom Johnson seems poised for breakout season at Tulsa
  • By Jay Neal
TULSA, Okla. — Being in the spotlight, under pressure, and engulfed in great expectations is nothing new to Tulsa Golden Hurricane Keenen Johnson, a 6'-1”, 196-pound wide receiver from Alto.

It seems that is exactly where Johnson will find himself when training camp opens up next month.

Tulsa, who is coming off of a 10-3 overall, 6-2 American Athletic Conference season a year, ago lost several of its primary weapons on the offensive side of the ball, including its two-leading pass catchers, Keevan Lucas and Josh Atkinson, which opens the door for Johnson.

Johnson got a taste of NCAA Division I football last season where as a true freshman he played in eight games, and started in six of those.

Johnson had 30 grabs for 305 yards and averaged just north of 10.1 yards per catch.

In his first game last October against No. 12-ranked Houston, Johnson hauled in eight catches for 94 yards.

That big-game experience could go a long way in easing Johnson into a more prominent role in the Golden Hurricane offense this season.

Tulsa has a reputation for being an offensive dynamo. In the 2016 campaign the Golden Hurricane made FBS history by being the first team to have a 300-yard passer, two 1,000-yard receivers and two 1,000-yard rushers.

Being a part of an offense that puts up gaudy numbers is old hat for Johnson was a two-time all-state pick at quarterback while leading the Alto High School offense.

During his schoolboy days in southern Cherokee County Johnson amassed over 7,700 yards of total offense and accounted for 102 touchdowns.

Tulsa will open up the season by taking on Oklahoma State in Stillwater on Sept. 2.

Conference action will get under way on Sept. 30 when the Golden Hurricane host Navy.
