Day of Rage: An In-Depth Look at How a Mob Stormed the Capitol - The New York Times

We have been told one narrative since the beginning about what happened on 6 Jan however as more and more info comes out, it is getting more and more confusing. It seems like the agency knew and played a bigger role than initially thought. This is why a full, bipartisan investigation is so critical.

You do know that both are bad, right?
One is demonstrably worse. Businesses and things can be replaced. Disaster aid can be given. Our government is much harder to insure after people try to overthrow it. To repair it might mean paying with blood rather than currency.

I about spit my iced tea out reading that...
Its funny that the same people that claim that people with ARs cant defeat a tyrranic govt that has f15s and nukes think that an unarmed mob is a threat to the govt.
I guess the junta isnt as stable or as popular as they want us to think.

When the mob is trying to get into the chambers of congress to violently subdue and suppress a constitutionally mandated electoral process and to capture congressional representatives, I would say yes. It’s a serious threat. The side that’s trying to overthrow the democratic process doesn’t need to be armed when their leader is effectively acting in a similar manner to an African Warlord and keeping the military from protecting the process as the mob he incited to violence is allowed to more or less do what they want. That was the oppression that we would expect to see in Rwanda. Breaking into a local merchandiser chain isn’t something to be supported but we actually see it in civilized countries on occasion and it doesn’t tend to lead to civil war.

Look at France in the last 50 years for example. It’s worse to threaten 60,000,000 people’s electoral representation than it is to threaten 100 people’s businesses. Ask the founding fathers about the Boston Tea Party if you think they thought any differently.

You honestly think an unarmed mob can overthrow the US govt...wow.

I think they can if they have the support of the person commanding a large portion of the military. They don’t need many weapons if the people in the people’s assembly can’t stop them because they don’t have a true military force.

It happened in Rome multiple times to Tribunes of the Plebs. At the behest of the Roman Senators, the tribunes were killed by the mobs (gangs) and thrown into the Tiber. The gangs weren’t heavily armed like a Roman legion was and the legions weren’t allowed into the city by custom.

The Gracchi brothers, Tiberius and Gaius, were Romans who both served as tribunes of the plebs between 133 and 121 BC. They attempted to redistribute the occupation of the ager publicus—the public land hitherto controlled principally by aristocrats—to the urban poor and veterans, in addition to other social and constitutional reforms. After achieving some early success, both were assassinated by the Optimates, the conservative faction in the senate that opposed these reforms.

So congress needs its own military?
The commander in chief should be held to a higher standard of protecting (and not subverting) the constitution. Hence why his impeachment should have turned into a conviction. Not only did he not adequately protect the chamber as it carried out its constitutional duty, he actively supported the possibility of its overthrow. There have to be consequences serious historical consequences to try and prevent that type of behavior and to prevent what has, in the past, turned into a civil war. It happened again when King James I tried to lock Parliament out of their chamber.

It is one thing for a peaceful protest to get out of hand, but an insurrection designed to halt a constitutionally mandated process that has been observed for 200 years and is fundamental to our democratic process is completely different. Central to the oath a president takes is his promise to protect the Constitution. Instead Trump encouraged a mob for months to violently attack its core.
The most discouraging element is that so many officials do understand the difference but prefer excuses because of their political aspirations to lead that same mob.
The Trump continues to raise lots of money by continuing the big lie. It is simply another attack on our country.
Vladimir is smiling.

We would be the first country in the history of the modern age to have a group of people try to take over a gov with no weapons in a country that has more weapons than any country in the world 😂.

pelosi is hand picking the members for HER committee to investigate jan 6. she has refuse to allow some Republicans to serve. hardly a bipartisan commission, just another abuse of power and waste of taxpayer money by the democrats for political purposes.
When some of the people she was asked to seat on the commission could potentially be asked to testify, that might present a conflict of interest.

nancy isn't interested in a bipartisan commission; she wants to lead a Lynch mob.

a bogus 2 and a half year investigation. two kangaroo court impeachment, countless attacks on his support group and appointments, spying on an opposition candidate,

how much taxpayers money have the dnc spent on their partisan party politics witch hunts

i can't believe how obsessed the democrats are with trump.
It literally is a bipartisan commission. There are two parties represented. Also the republicans pulled more of their nominations because two accomplices weren’t allowed to sit on the commission. Who’s fault is that really?

How bad has your party become when you’re shunning one person brave enough to stand up for virtues who was related to one of your most influential VP’s ever to sit in the office and both father and daughter have been ultra conservative in their policies. One break with their party on an issue that shouldn’t be partisan, and now you’re saying they’re no longer Republicans.

Moreover, you’re not listening to the actual cops who defended the f’ing constitution. You’re so brainwashed that you won’t even acknowledge that there are some congressional republicans who might bare some responsibility for their literal incitement of a riot that was aimed at halting a constitutionally mandated process.

As Biden allows no control of our border bring up the last president. Jan 6 was terrible in my opinion. By the next election Trump could be as senile as Biden. I don't think and hope he will not be elected. But your attack all Republicans and defend China crap is getting tired.

I don't give a wit about Trump. I am concerned with a broken process where the dems can accuse and indict him and his supporters for offenses while ignoring similar offenses for dems and their agenda.
Your beliefs just happen to mirror his. How funny that is...

I missed the attempted insurrection and claims of election fraud after Trump won in 2016. As I recall Hillary testified under oath in front of taxpayer paid Republican Congress about 11 times over Benghazi. Trump refused to testify before Congress and would only send a letter that his tax payer paid attorneys prepared. .

Try another excuse.

her testimony consisted of "i dont know", "i dont remember", "i take the fifth", "what difference dose it matter amyway"

whatever happened to her 30,000 emails, hard drives, blackberrys, cell phones, requested by the fbi?
what is the price of uranium today?
i need some influence, how much should i contribute to her foundation.

how much was the foreign aid package joe threatened to withhold if the eukraine investigated hunter.
But her emails!

how much did the mueller report cost, or impeachment I, or impeachment II, or our open border,
Those things are only liabilities if they aren’t legitimate. That’s like asking about how much the Nixon investigations cost.

jan 6 was conducted by an out of control group assaulting our constitution.
impeachment I and II were conducted by an out of control group, assaulting our constitution.
the muller investigation was conducted by an out of control group assaulting our constitution
social media censorship is conducted by an out of control group assaulting our constitution.
No. Just no.

the mueller report and the impeachments were strictly party politics, engineered by a congress the abused it authority.at taxpayers expense.
The fact don't support this claim. The Mueller report was set in motion by Trump's own DoJ. Mueller' was selected by Trump's DOJ and approved by a Republican controlled Senate. The same Republican Senate voted an additional bill to protect the Mueller investigation. The investigation resulted in multiple criminal convictions via jury trials and guilty pleas. Federal courts have criticized AG Barr for his misrepresentation of the investigation as clearing Trump.

congress should recuse themselves in this action since they were the target. change the venue. put it in a real court with real rules for both sides
This is an investigation, not a trial.

Trials are conducted through the justice system.

Please Rivals, make your ignore button work….

WTF? You on something. What are the "rules" that you think are missing for the GOP? Are they missing the ability to have ingram come on and lie about his text messages to trump while blaming antifa?

holder did not appear when called.
hrc did appear but either took the 5th or couldn't remember.
hrc destroyed evidence.
the mueller investigation was based on a false document
both impeachment efforts were bogus, while biden is guilty of one.
rules? we have the fox guarding the hen house.
HRC never took the fifth. On one occasion she gave 11 hours of Public testimony before a largely hostile congressional committee and answered every question factually.
Benghazi was “investigated” for FOUR YEARS and did not produce even one indictment.

Your other claims are equally bogus.

Try reality, it is the best cure.

dems have now been in power for a year all they do is obcess over trump and jan 6.

why not their successes: covid, the economy, supply chain, inflation, the debt, troup withdrawal, immigration, energy independence, and UNITY.

Their success: Distributing to everyone intelligent enough to save themselves from severe illness an avenue to do so. Passing a bipartisan bill to improve infrastructure. Not having a president impeached twice. Not having affairs with Porn Stars and paying them hush money… not colluding with foreign powers. Not purposefully misleading the American public for their own benefit. Not tanking the American economy by starting a trade war with China. Not giving new tax breaks to all their buddies and paying for it with new debt from the American public. Not firing half their staffs every week because they don’t like to be told they aren’t correct. Actually reading intelligence briefings… not misleading the public purposefully about public health crises.

Another element is the sense of relief that the Biden is not airing some new grievance every day and calling those who disagree disgusting names to ramp up anger at other countries and fellow Americans. Trump's grievances were never resolved. NKorea was a soap opera. All the drama about NAFTA resulted in minor tweaks. China tariffs only raised prices on Americans. And so on.

The worst element, however, is that while me may have been divided before Trump came in to office, the divisions now are much deeper and the foundation of our democracy is in jeopardy. The video as the top of this thread summarizes what happened a year ago pretty well.

Even commenting here is a waste of time. If the Republicans in Congress who condemned Trump for what they saw with their own eyes and heard with their own ears a year ago have now decided that nothing happened, and 90% of Republicans now agree, then it's hard to believe there is any going back.

the jan 6th rioters are not as big a threat to our democracy and constitution as the "holier than thou" pelosi. shiff, shumar, etal ... who hide behind their position and abuse their office for politcal party purposes.
