Good Afternoon all!

My wife and I are traveling into town in early November for your Friday night contest against UCF. Tulsa will mark the 35th FBS stadium off my list. Was curious what your tailgating was like and where it happens? Any suggestions for dinner before the game?

One last thing - I collect a car flag from stadium I visit. Your bookstore told me they do not sell them. Is there another store on campus that sells them?

Thanks for your help!

Welcome.

Tailgating will be limited because this is a Friday night game. Oklahoma is a huge high school football state and a good portion of our crowd will be there.

We have a 90 year old stadium that was restored about 10 years ago. It’s small and a throwback to college football of yesteryear. You can expect to sit on the 50 yard line with a seatback about 15 rows up for $40.00. If you don’t want to pay anything, tickets are free if you walk in the Alzheimer’s charity event before the game. Like I said, there’s parts of our gameday that will make you think it is 1949.

Your average TU fan will remind you of the dude sitting at the bar at the 19th Hole at every middle class country club you have ever visited. Laid back but obviously educated. Has money but doesn’t spend it. Wearing chinos 25 years old because he likes them and doesn’t need to impress. Can talk to you about drilling technology, Yeats, the federal reserve, the Bible, Sergio Leone movies, pro wrestling and ancient Chinese mysticism in the same conversation but still make you feel smarter than him. The type of guy you invite over to Thanksgiving dinner to make your relatives bearable.

The University has a sponsored tailgate space one block west of the stadium on a campus green called Chapman Commons. They invest a lot of money in it, so it’s a shame you won’t get the full benefit of our Gameday. There is typically a live band and several large tents for various alumni booster and student groups. However, this being a Friday and a kickoff one hour after business closes, it will be a light crowd I would imagine. www.tulsahurricane.com has most of the game day details you might need. Click on the drop down menu and select Fan Zone. Beer will be available for purchase on the green and seating is provided. Mrs. Clayton should be aware that we now have a clear bag policy and large purses are not permitted. There is a large convenience store across from the stadium for any last minute items and fast food nearby. Free parking is plentiful in nearby neighborhoods but a little bit of a walk. (400 yards or less). Parking on campus is limited. On campus purchased parking is arguably farther away that free surface street parking.

Once on campus you’ll find that everyone will be surprised you are there, very welcoming, and able to answer most questions. If you want to wear your Cyclone gear to announce your visit, nobody will flinch or hassle you and you’ll fit in wearing red or gold, but most folks wear our other color of blue.

If the bookstore no longer sells those car flags, it’s because the Alumni Association was giving them away last year. The bookstore is located on the southeast corner of 11th and Harvard, which is the intersection where the stadium is located. Get to the game a little early, go in there and ask again, if they don’t have one, then visit Collins Hall, the building opposite the fountains where the tailgating is centered. Go inside and head straight back to the opposite wall and ask in the Alumni office for one. If they don’t have any, email me at huffycane at yahoo.com and I’ll make sure you get one even if I have to mail you an unused spare I have in my home.

Our TU General Forum contains endless debates on the best meals in Tulsa. Look over there for tips on Burgers, Pizza, Chicken Fried Steak, etc. We all have our favorites. If staying downtown, I’d say Albert G’s BBQ just based on quality and consistency, but brace yourself for disagreement from folks on here.

If available, the Campbell Hotel is an excellent boutique hotel experience and walking distance to the stadium.

Thanks for taking time to come down to TU and stopping by here.

Awesome input. Thank you so much for taking the time to give me a solid breakdown. I was kind of worried the Friday night might kill the atmosphere but was hoping with it being UCF some fans might show up. Oh well, gotta take what I can get. Thanks for filling me in!

Just returning the consideration shown to all TU fans after our 2012 Liberty Bowl win over Iowa State. You’re a classy group.

We went up to the game when we played you all in Iowa. Could not have been a nicer group of fans, and some of the best tailgating I have seen. We were actually invited to tailgate with several of your fans, which we appreciated so much.

To return the favor, if you would like to tailgate with our group, we have a spot on Chapman Commons, which Huffy detailed above. Just let me know and I will give you details.

Not sure if you have done the research, but TU is the smallest Division 1 FBS school, with an undergraduate enrollment of around 4000 students. The campus is absolutely beautiful, but a different feel than a major state university. So we do not have a large fan base to begin with, and a Friday evening game will impact attendance even more.

If you happen to know a competent head football coach, feel free to bring him along with you.

I'll add on the food stuffs in and around town. Albert G's was mentioned for BBQ. I am partial to Burn Co. which uses Hasty Bake grills to smoke their meats...Hasty Bakes are built in Tulsa. Cherry Street (15th Street between Utica and Peoria) have some unique local eateries. Kilkenny's is an Irish Pub where you can get a Boxty as well as a nice pint. More downtown, you have a plethora of places. The Tavern is nice. Prairie Artisan Ales Brewpub is nice as well. Closer to campus at 11th and Lewis is the Mother Road Market which is a collection of eateries with options ranging from BBQ, to specialty fried chicken, gourmet burgers, pizza, city eats, tacos, and sushi. Great thing about it is everyone can find something and no one has to agree on what type of food to get. It's about a mile from the stadium. It does get busy pregame.

Also, TU promotes different food trucks inside the stadium. One is Siegl's, a local, authentic sausage maker. The grobe brats are excellent.

Here is a link to a car flag

If you happen to stay (or park) at the Campbell Hotel, check out the hotel restaurant. Jane's Delicatessen. Great food, good bar and even better brunch.

As others have said, the Campbell Hotel is a restored hotel that has themed rooms. It is a brief walk to the stadium and before you get to the stadium you’ll get to the tailgating. We stayed in the Leon Russell room when we were there for a game. Nice.

I went to the Tulsa game at Iowa State a few years back with some friends. 4 guys wearing blue and gold, TU shirts, hats, party beads, and perhaps a few beverages. We parked on the north side of the basketball arena so we had to wade through a half mile of Iowa State tailgaters. It took forever, because every 3rd tailgate stopped us, invited us over for a drink, and asked us about this year's Tulsa team. Obviously into their own team, but genuinely curious about my team.

When we finally got to the line to get into the stadium, some drunk Iowa State student came running over and started yelling something about never actually having met a Tulsa fan. That he heard we were among the rarest breeds in college football. At first I thought he was trying to be a jerk, then he babbled something about he just heard the entire University of Tulsa has less students than the Mechanical Engineering department at ISU and he thought that was awesome for a University whose football team beat Notre Dame. He proceeded to produce 5 beers from his waste band, hand 4 to us, and insist we "chug one more" before going into the game. It was swill, but it was fun.

Iowa State fans were fun at the Liberty Bowl.

Iowa State fans were fun at the return game.

This year, Iowa State played the first round of the NCAA Tournament in Tulsa. The Iowa State party sight was just a block down the street from my office, and the fans were great.

By coincidence, this fall, my son started at Iowa State (Welch Hall).

So, welcome to Tulsa. I hope you have a blast. Everyone here is giving good advice. Where you should stay depends on what you want to do while here. There isn't too much near campus (there isn't a "campus town" really, since there is not a towns worth of students).

Downtown is an $8 Uber ride or a 15 minute e-scooter trek. The Tulsa Arts District has a decent amount of nightlife and restaurants. The Campbell is really nice and definitely unique, but I'd probably stay at the Fairfield in the Tulsa arts District and drive or Uber to the game (depending on how much you plan to drink) just because I like to stay in entertainment districts. You'd be positioned prime to go out for dinner and some cocktails afterwords and stagger back to your hotel. Other districts closish to campus to find things to do include Brookside (middle to upscale restaurants and bars) and Cherry Street.

Walk through some of the art deco sky scrappers downtown. Grab a drink at the rooftop bar of the Mayo for some good views of the City. Hit up Burn Co for the best BBQ in town (I know everywhere likes to pretend they invented BBQ... but as a poor state between KC and Texas, we've figured a few things out. BBQ Bologna is a unique Okie thing. I may start a fight, but I'd say Albert G's second place for BBQ & Rib Crib is a Tulsa based chain run by a former Tulsa football player that's worth eating at). If you like beer, there are 10 or 12 breweries between Campus and the Fairfield Inn in the Arts District (2.6 miles), including three breweries, a cider house, and distillery on the same block 1 mile from campus.

Also worth checking out the Philbrook Museum (old art in an old oil mansion), the Gilcrease Museum (TU run museum of American artifacts and western American Art), the Gathering Place ($400 million public park, mostly for kids, but entirely worth walking through just to see), head out to Oral Robert's campus and check out the futuristic 1960s architecture and the most random sky scrapper ever, donate some money to the tribes at the large casinos, take a detour on your way back to Iowa and go to the tall grass prairie and see a herd of 2500 bison on open ground, or stick around campus and celebrate after Tulsa increases our Central Florida win streak to 3 in a row. Fun fact, Central Florida has NEVER won at Tulsa.

Oh, and expect weather anywhere between 15 F and 75 F. But generally, start the day a bit cold and get up to sweat shirt weather if the sun is out. If the football gods are smiling, it will be a perfect day for football.

And seriously, they've never won in Tulsa.

Nobody ever mentions it, but there is a really good Korean restaurant right across the street from the stadium; It's called Lone Wolf. It's small and the menu is limited but it is very good.

This is true. They specialize in Banh Mi style sandwiches, but you'll also find traditional kimchi.

These people aren't really that nice. They want to eat your brains.

Their bowls on rice or lettuce are just as good as their Banh Mi. And I've heard people ordering in their and I would have to disagree with you on specializing in Banh Mi.

I'll be honest...I've never been in the brick and mortar restaurant. I've only gotten stuff from the food truck when it was out and about. My personal favorite is the Pulled pork Banh Mi with the thai chili aioli. Never misses.

Somebody told me it used to be a whorehouse back in the day too ...

You all are more than welcome to tailgate with our group. It will be our annual chili cookoff depending on game time. You can find details about group on Facebook. Welcome to Tulsa!

Thanks for the offer!! I might have to take you up on that if we're able to get to the stadium early enough. Based on what everyone is saying I wish we'd be in town longer. Just thought we'd cross this off the list during the same weekend we're heading to Norman to see the Cyclones play. I think we'll be taking a return trip to Tulsa for sure!

If you look at a campus map, we are on the northeast corner of Chapman Commons. These are “leased” spaces, so they are numbered. You will see signs. We are #6. We will be there about 3:00 and will stay set up till about 30 minutes before kickoff. Stop on by!

Thanks to your offer and all the suggestions, we've changed our flights and weather pending should be in Thursday night now giving us all day to roam around before the game on Friday. Looking forward to checking out the area and meeting up.

Yes sir! The chili cook off is on. Anyone is welcome to come. $4 for a tasting pass to sample all the chili or $5 to enter one and it includes a tasting pass. We have had this cook off for over 20 years and have celebrity judges. This will be our best group yet. We are announcing them on the Facebook page Monday.

Your chili cookoff should be on. The game time has already been posted at 6:00p.

We are announcing them on the Facebook page tonight or tomorrow, but I’ll give you all the scoop haha. Our former TU athlete judge is 4th all time leading tackler Mike “The Hammer” White. Our media judge is tulsa sports radio legend, Don King. Our culinary judge is the owner of Ricardo’s Mexican restaurant.
Hey can you email me at Gmoney4ww@gmail.com.

Also a stadium traveler excited for Tulsa. Are those field level loge seats worth it? Unless there's access to better food, it looks like you're better off buying a chairback up above.

Take the latter option. The "loge" seats simply get you in a boxed in area with the same seats w/ backs as the rows above it or below it. You're still stuck with the concession foods.

Before the stadium renovations, my wife and I did buy 4 seats in the boxes because they were the same price as the seats in front of and in back of them. However, they were just folding chairs so you could actually move them around a little and create additional leg room/space. We had a toddler who didn't need a ticket, so the extra space was welcomed.

If your offer still stands we'll see you some time on Thursday. Looks to be fairly decent weather!

Absolutely the offer still stands. We are located in Chapman Commons, the northeast part. Usually the NE corner of Commons has a displayed with either Land Rovers or Jaguars parked...if that helps you get your bearings. The tailgate spots are numbered with signs, we are #6. My name is David...name is on the sign. We are going to have a very small group, being Friday evening game. I need to pick up some drinks, what do you like? I am going to bring some beer, and might even make a cocktail as well. We will set up around 4.

You don't need to go out of your way to get anything for us! We're just happy to have a place to stop at for a beer or two before the game. I was planning to stop somewhere between downtown and campus prior to arrival to grab a sixer. See you guys in a couple of days!

I need to buy some beer anyway...I am not a big beer drinker. I will bring some a selection of Tulsa/ Oklahoma local craft brews for you to try. We have some incredible breweries in the state. Also I will bring a bourbon cocktail....mixology is kind of my passion. Since we don't have much time, we are just having pizza. How many of you will be there? See you then!

Hard to go wrong with Bourbon! Just myself and the wifey. :)

Thank you! Is Reynolds (or wherever they keep the trophy case) usually open? Someone in our group is a Valley fan and wanted to take pics of Tulsa’s MVC trophies.

Really excited and rooting for Tulsa to finish off UCF like they did Notre Dame! Seems you guys are just a big play or two from breaking through (SMU, Cincinnati, Memphis).
