If you don't like inflation, just change the rules.

Only the most partisan sheep are buying the “we just changed the definition of a recession because we don’t want to be in one ” garbage.

I don't think arguing with people who are having difficulty purchasing things and beginning to be laid off about the true definition of recession is likely to help dems. Probably will have the opposite effect, which is why it's such an odd thing to try to spin

welcome back.

Trump claimed that Obama cooked the books on unemployment rates and then after his election used the same calculation because it made him look good. If one is being measured and can influence the measurement standard why beat yourself up with one that doesn't work for you? Irresistble and another good argument for an independent civil service.

This isn’t a calculation though. It’s a simple definition which has been used for decades.

I just don't understand why it really matters.

Bush had 2 recessions start within his admin. Bush 1.0 had one, Reagan had 2. Trump had 1 related to Covid. It's not the 'recession' that's a problem. It's the factors causing the recession that are a problem.

The recessions is what it is. Many of us knew a recession was inevitable given the economic circumstances and subsequent actions by the Fed. Arbitrarily attempting to change the definition of a recession to avoid having to admit to the same simply brings attention to the current economic state. Not sure why you don’t just own it like your predecessors.

Owning it with the upheaval going on politically is a bad choice. Not owning is seems like an excuse, and is a bad choice. No good choices at the moment. They seem to be taking the Trump model, and not owning anything that makes them look bad. You know if Trump were still in office he would be saying it's not a recession repetitively. He already pre-emptively "spent(several) days arguing that recession fears are a media construct meant to take him down." in 2019. In some sense not admitting to any failures worked for him. Trump had a base that believed everything he said, despite evidence to the contrary. They might have even made excuses to themselves early on in a recession if Trump denied it.

I don't think it will work as well for the Democrats in this instance. It's hard to deny something that everybody feels financially. The evidence of a stolen election had no evidence felt by the masses. At this point there are actually some technical means that make it slightly believable, but it still probably won't work. Especially when those technical matters become not true any longer. We still don't meet the full definition of a recession. There are other pointers to a recession besides a falling GDP. But they are secondary to the two quarter reduction of the GDP.

Don’t you think changing the definition brings even more attention to the current economic conditions? Not to mention giving the impression you would rather play silly word games than talk about solutions. Solutions to a problem you’re now denying exists. Never good look when people are trying to rationalize it by saying “Trump probably would have changed the definition as well in an attempt to deny it”. Just seems like a weird political move which very few people outside of hardcore Dems are likely to buy into.

I don't have a dog in this race. I'm not denying anything. I'm just trying to analyze their rationale. I think all of these word games by the republicans, trump, the democrats, and biden's administration are ridiculous. But it's the game they are playing.

Agree….unfortunately. The days of politicians saying “it’s on me, I feel your pain, and here’s how I’m going to fix it” seem to be a thing of the past. Seems like conditions would be conducive for the formation of a new political party. I can dream.

The did just form a new party for centrist Republicans and Democrats as well as Independents. The announcement came out a couple of days ago.

The Forward party is being fronted by Yang and former Republican David Jolly. Don't know if that will satisfy your desires. Christine Whitman, former Republican governor of New Jersey will chair the party with Yang.

Seems like they need two new parties, not just one. Centrist Democrats and Centrist Republicans need separate parties. But maybe that is too much for the public to handle right now. Just seems like one party for the both, couldn't keep all of their politicians and constituents on the same page.

Jolly I know nothing about. Yang I have a soft spot for because he’s one of the few Dems that never sounds like he despises me, but he’s definitely not a centrist in policy.

I would have named it something else.. not only was that an Obama campaign slogan, but, "Forward!" was/is the slogan of most major marxist/socialist/communist movements of the last 150yrs..

Yang is eccentric in his policy stances, and not in a good way. He wants to run the country like a venture capital company and that's not how the country can or should be run.

how much more money will the dems spend ( money we dont have ), to solve any problem.

im going to follow their lead. ill max out all my credit cards. get more and max them, and then head to Vegas
