When I coached softball the #1 trait I looked for was someone who hustled. Never gave up on a play. Played until the very last out every single game no matter the score. Hustle can make up for the lack of skill. It's a mindset that is hard to come by. To devote all your energy during every play. Did you get walked by the pitcher? Run to first base. Routine ground ball? RUN to first base. Pop up to the SS? RUN to first base. You never know what will happen. The catcher could miss the 4th pitch and you could stretch a walk into potentially a double. The routine ground ball could be bobbled. The pop up to SS could be dropped. HUSTLE! Now you are saying this is a basketball thread....take this to the softball forum. Mainly I just wanted to say Konkol has what I like to see when I evaluated players. He is hustling his butt off on the recruitment trail. He is going after players that previous coaches would have given up on because "Big Name" schools have entered the fray. He might not get the recruit but he will not be outworked for him. He is going to be the coach that the players see. He is going to show them his passion and how much he cares for the game and the athlete. I'm ok losing recruits to other schools as long as I know we are going after them and going after them hard. Konkol is impressing me to the fullest.

Maybe it is just me but I don't think the two sports or what you describe are completely alike. I also think the ability to coach in-game is cool too and that doesn't include just yelling at them to running to first base. Comparatively, Konkol's teams scored 6-7 points more a game over Haith's.

Sounds like Pete Rose. In his book "Play Hungry" his dad would not let him eat supper if his team lost no manner how well Pete played. Gave him a reason to encourage his team mates to play better.

I'll be honest I'm not sure what you are trying to say here. I wasn't comparing the two sports together. I was comparing his hardwork he is showing on the recruiting trail to the type of player I looked for when I was coaching. He has been hitting it hard and it's getting a lot of my respect.
