My understanding of the gun laws in Chicago is 95 percent of those packing guns in the crime ridden areas of that city are likely doing so illegally. Poverty, crime, drugs, guns, lack of a nuclear family…rinse and repeat. So hard to reverse that cycle for those who live in those areas. We need new ideas and solutions.

Most these kids don’t have “parents”. They have one parent in the household. Removing the one parent in the household just seems like a bad idea. You’re going to have a lot of kids running around with zero parents in their lives. One is still better than zero imo.
Wasnt really thinking about the inner city thugs... more tninking about the suburban kid filled with teenaged angst that the parents have written off.. but, if the single parents (both baby daddy and baby momma) thinks they can be jailed for their kids actions, maybe they will take more of an interest in the issue of their loins..
The suburban kids are not the problem, the 'inner city thugs' comprise most of the violence in Chicago.
Yeah.. the thread was gun violence though.. and suburban kids seem to be the school shooters so...
But, i think it applies.. an underage kid kills someone with a gun, well guess what? Mom n dad.. you get to do time as well..
It depends on which type of crime you are going after. The inner city stuff is much more related to poverty than anything else.
Apparently one of the fastest growing areas of gun violence involves people momentarily pissed off or anxious resorting to using the handy gun. We have all heard about people being shot for ringing the wrong doorbell (while black), getting into the wrong car (while black), and the like, but the state patrol here is now warning everyone about the dangers of road rage after a recent incident where a person honked at a car the cut him off and in return was shot at multiple times. The state patrol is now advising people that road rage is on the rise, and everyone should not react to and to stay away from cars demonstrating bad behavior.
How are you ignoring the 44 people (while black) who were shot this weekend in Chicago by people (while black) with hand guns? I’ve never understood why people focus on the 1% and ignore the 99%…well in some cases I understand all too well.
Those numbers were from ONE american city this last weekend. How many black people were shot ringing a doorbell across our entire country this weekend? There’s a serious problem with guns out there costing thousands of people their lives weekly but it not from ringing damn doorbells.
Part of that is likely related to the proximity of Chicago to areas where guns are easily available. Part of it also has to do with demographics and population density vs other large cities. In any cases, it probably means we need fewer guns on the street rather than more.
Ironically the 2010 SC case McDonald v City of Chicago which overturned Chicago's ban on granting permits for purchase of handguns probably made things worse, even though the excuse given to the court was that residence wanted to better protect themselves from crime. Now, instead of a homeowner being equipped with a shotgun and the criminals being armed with lesser weapons (because it's unwieldy and noticeable to police to open carry a long gun in the middle of a crime ridden part of the city) you have people keeping handguns on their person and everyone is on an equal footing when it comes to shooting each other.
In Chicago, most of the traced guns, about 16,500 of them, were bought from somewhere within Illinois, with about 8,200 more coming from Indiana. Wisconsin, Kentucky and Mississippi each was the source of fewer than 2,000 guns.
By contrast, few guns recovered in crimes in New York were originally purchased there. The biggest sources for those guns were Georgia, South Carolina and Virginia.
Brandon del Pozo, a Brown University researcher, notes that New York and the states that surround it all have stringent gun laws.
The “iron pipeline” — the route criminals must travel to buy guns easily — is extremely long for New Yorkers, who often go to Southern states to obtain them, del Pozo says.
“In Chicago, you are never more than a few hours away to get a gun or go to a place with lax laws regarding guns,” he says.
The ATF gun report was the result of the agency’s first comprehensive study of criminal gun-trafficking in two decades, according to the Justice Department.
Among the national issues the report highlighted, theft is a significant way that guns get into criminals’ hands. From 2017 to 2021, more than one million guns were stolen from private owners across the country, the report said.
The report also said the recovery of switches rose 570% over the same period.
One thing that New York and other states do that Chicago doesn't is a record of each handgun sale being transferred directly to law enforcement. It would probably be good for them to adopt something similar.
