President Biden and Xi Jinping discussed topics including Afghanistan, North Korea and Iran, as well as human rights, climate change and concerns over Taiwan

Xi is known for adult behavior like banning Winnie the Pooh because critics said Pooh resembled him

These are the leaders of the two largest economies in the world and two nuclear powers whose relations have deteriorated over the past five years. Given the possibiliies for war, economic stagnation and climate damage, reestablishing a healthy albeit wary working relationship has to be a top US priority. A welcome change, paricularly from the previous administration’s carnival show approach which increased our trade deifict and created opportunities for military confrontations.

Confused why you keep mentioning our increase trade deficits with China?

2016 trade -$347M
2020 trade -$310M

347 > 310

Hard to imagine a man who can’t put together a coherent sentence negotiating anything btw. Hopefully others are taking the lead.

Trump’s claim that trade deficits can be easily cured by tariffs have only made the problem worse. For those worried about inflation, the China tarrifs only add to the problem.

Yes, I prefer trusting the Biden adminstration to soberly negotiate serious issues. At least he will staff the process with experts not afraid to voice their opinions instead letting egomania control the process. Trump’s over hyped trade and foreign policy gaffes have to be reversed and put on a sane footing.

If nothing can be done about climate change because of China, shouldn’t addressing the issue directly with China be welcomed? Was it ever even addressed by Trump?

The relationship with China is critical in many areas and seeing those issues being addressed, tensions reduced, and understanding increased is a step forward. It will be a long, fraught process and the US needs to be a stable, trustworthy participant.

I referenced trade numbers with China since this is what your post was regarding. Specifically, that tariffs imposed on China have increased our trade deficit with the same. That claim simply isn’t true. Directly from the US government

It’s reasonable to view any “negotiations Biden undertakes with skepticism given his lack of cognitive ability. As I said above, hopefully we have people other than Biden in the room heading these talks.

You just keep on cashing those Chinese checks...

A big reason we need to encourage divestment from China: they own us with sheer market power, coercing our largest and most powerful companies into immoral garbage. The soviets would have loved this kind of leverage

Grownups destroy relationships with NATO allies by not telling them how or when you're doing things when moving out of afghanistan, forcing them to leave their own allies behind. When the UK, Germany, and France were saying that their relationship with the US was at it's lowest point ever during the withdrawal it sure sounded like they thought the grownups were in charge.

More rebuilding key relationships without fanfare and accusations. After Trump’s bad cop act, time for the good cop to step back in?

anybody will be your friend if you give them the farm and ask for little in return

China,Mexico and Canada are key relationships that have long needed attention and rebuilding The new NAFTA was essentially the old NAFTA with some window dressing and a lot of unnecessary drama. The China relationship was headed the wrong way as well. Biden has been slow to change course but seems to have realized that focusing on our mutual interests is a better path forward.
