Detroit Mercy's Davis threatening Pistol Pete's Record is misleading at best.

Pistol Pete achieved his record in only 3 seasons as Freshmen were not eligible then and there was no three point line. All of Pete's goals only counted for 2 points each.

Davis has now played for 5 seasons and had the three point line every year.

Thus no comparison whatsoever. But his coach is making a big PR thing about it.

That means nothing unless you are trying to make a goat argument. Even in the NBA scoring titles change with the rule changes. He is 196 points from tying him. The issue Davis will have is the fact he is running out of games. Is Pete better than Antoine? yes. Does it really matter if Davis eclipses the number for the scoring record? absolutely not. So yeah him getting close is a big thing especially from a Horizon school.

The fact PP set the scoring record in 3 seasons in the SEC without the 3 point line just demonstrates how great of a college player he was in his day. Good luck to Davis. I know it’s 5 years and the Horizon but it’s still a great accomplishment for the kid.

Exactly

I don't really want him to break it. The extra year of playing time for covid shouldn't be responsible for breaking a bunch of long held records. Let him come close, and keep the record intact. He'd have to get to the championship game, to have a chance. Which means he is using every bit of that 5th season to get there.

As far as shooting prowess goes I don’t think there will ever be anyone as good as Maravich but in the end it’s impossible to compare players from different eras. Want to feel old? Babe Ruth’s 60 home run season was closer to Roger Maris’s 61 season than Pete’s career was to Davis’s.

Exactly! Let’s keep it in basketball. Lebron James just took over the scoring title from Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Kareem attempted 18 3 pointers in his career and made 1 while James has attempted 6,499 and made 2,237. Making things even, Lebron is still short 6,684 points from Kareem. Different eras do not take away from how good this man is doing or the level of achievement he is making.

Ps. Michael Jordan is the goat

That's all part of the game, and it evolving. The four or five year exception of a fifth season, due to covid is not.

We probably will agree to disagree on this as they were not letting high schoolers in when Kareem came into the NBA either. You had to go through school. Here was Lebron and Kobe bypassing college. So that will debunk that COVID option as you said evolution. Things happen and the world we live in happens. We still need to give it up to the man if he breaks it.

That all affects the nba records, not ncaa. I'll give it up for the guy if he breaks the record, I just don't want him to. Not for a four or five year exception to the rule for college ball due to a pandemic. I don't want a ton of records in the ncaa broken because of the extra year. If he or anybody else breaks long held records for the ncaa, I will always put an asterisk next to them. There is a lot more variation to an NBA career due to it being generally longer than an ncaa career. All thru. 😜

I saw both play in their prime. LSU had to play against Kentucky and the SEC while Davis plays against the Horizon. No comparison in which player is best but if they give a player enough years (5,6, or 7) they will break the record in points counted . Good for Davis. We even got to see our guards try to defend him and help him break the record.

Put both their name in the books and put ans asterisk next to each. One for PP that says three seasons and no three point line. Other guy great job, fantastic production for five years.

Both Davis and Pete played for Daddy in college. Not knocking either player. Pete was the goat of college hoops.

I saw Lew Alcindor play in 1966 in Pauley Pavilion. I've never seen a better college player who dominated the NCAA and even made them change the rules so that I couldn't dunk in high school. lol.........

My parents went to a few UCLA Freshman games when Alcindor played. They said it was much easier to get varsity tickets that year.

Pete's record stands for now. Despite Mike Davis' campaigning. Detroit Mercy was not given a bid to the CBI as they refused to take a team with a losing record.
They gave a CBI bid to Tarleton St(Go Billy go!) as the #7 seed.

I thought the better bet for Detroit Mercy was 'The Basketball Classic by Erace'.(formerly CIT) I can hardly find anything on it recently though. So who knows if it is even happening. The only thing I found was projections for the Tourney on Feb 20th.
