Dane evans

Evan's team the Hamilton Tiger Cats are 2-1 favorites to win the Grey Cup. I tried to look up MVP candidate odds for the CFL but couldn't find any. Would have to assume Dane's name is up there. He is 6th in yards despite playing 3 and 4 games fewer than the majority of starters (~600 behind the leader). His 72.1 completion % leads the league for everyone over 250 attempts. His efficiency rating (103.9) is 2nd for those w/ 250+ attempts. 21 TDs/13 INTs. I would think his primary competition for the aware would be Cody Fajardo in Saskatchewan who led the league in passing yards (4300+ over 17 games). 18 TDs/8 INTs, 105.2 efficiency.

On that note, former TU WR Bryan Burnham is 2nd in the league in receiving with 1401 yds on 93 catches (15.1 avg.) and 10 TD.

Now if he could just join the Edmonton Eskimos and win the Grey Cup with them so my hometown can win something of relevance since the Oilers won their last cup to spite Gretzky leaving town in '90.

I could tell you that, but it would be a lie. That stuff sure works well at the HS level.

BB could evaluate talent and recruit. He just put the players in outdated and over conservative offensive sets. Tell me I’m wrong.
Ehhh. He hit on quite a few early. Not sure how to explain the recruiting the last two years though. He took a lot of weird risks on players and ended up with guys who weren’t cut out for the American & A LOT of character risk guys. This was the biggest problem Montgomery had to face. Yes he won with the cream of BB’s players but he also didn’t have any depth in 2017 because all the guys that should have been reliable upperclassmen were gone. The 2013 & 2014 classes were horrendous when it comes to career production. The saving graces were Keevan & Brubaker in ‘13 and the future OL of Miller, Bowling, Wright in ‘14. The number of misses really hurt the program though.

The Oilers won the Stanley Cup at the expense of the Boston Bruins...and then I had to wait 21 years for them to get back to the Cup finals. The '88 series was weird. There was the power outage game in the old Gahden. The fog. And if I remember correctly Esa Tikkanen won one of the games in like 3 OT on a shot that Reggie Lemelin just whiffed on (last of the stand up goalies).

But he was also stubborn and refused to let an OC run the offense or call plays. At least Graham was smart about it after his 1 yr stint as play caller. He went and got Morris.

BB did get some really god players. But we had little depth. And his version of the offense was best suited for HS where you could just out physical or out athlete teams...sort of like Monty's offense.

It was #85, Petr Klima who netted the 3OT winner. His first shift since the 2nd period of the game (Muckler sat him for some reason for 5 periods). Boston had good teams back then, they were an easy team to root for. My favorite cup win was 1990 because Edmonton was not expected to ever get close after Gretzky left town in '88. Anyway, the good old days when sports were competitive and the playing field was level...

You're right on the Klima thing. And he always wore that weird boxy helmet. For some reason I thought it was Tikkanen who was a Bruins pest back then. Those Bruins teams had some quality players including one of the last not required to wear a helmet in Rick Middleton.

'90 was the year Moog became the FT starter in goal for the Bruins. That was a weird dynamic against the Oilers. And that was when every team had a goon (not an enforcer like they call them today). Jay Miller was one of the best at it. And Neely was probably one of the most under-rated players in the game at the time, and just a year later Ulf Samuellson effectively ended his career with the dirty leg check.

And not even current hockey
I can talk current hockey, but only 15 games in, there's too small a sample size but here goes:
1) I have no idea who will win the Western Conference. Lots of 'meh' teams including the current owners of the Stanley Cup. No one has stood out to me so far. Maybe Nashville?
2) Eastern Conference: The Bruins and Caps look to be the class of the conference, both off to the best October starts in quote some time (its the best October ever for the Caps, best for the B's in 90 years). Buffalo off to a good start but I expect they will fade like they have the last 4 seasons after getting off to good starts. Tampa may have the best talent in the conference, but are surprisingly off to a terrible start. Both the Bruins and Caps are more balanced than Tampa (IMO).

All is dependent on what type of impact injuries teams may suffer through the season. Boston was without Bergeron and Chara for a lengthy period of time early last year and they got off to a bad start...and then went on a stretch from early December to mid-February without losing a game in regulation. Who gets hot? Hard to say. I think Vegas has the talent to get hot, Dallas too.

Early Season Trophy Picks:

Hart (MVP) David Pastrnak
Vezina: (Goalie): Tuuka Rask
Norris (Defense): Ryan Ellis (NSH) or John Carlson (WSH). I give the nod to Ellis for the better +/-

These are all brief sample sizes. I'm sure the guy from Edmonton probably thinks McDavid should win the Hart Trophy.

Is Gretzky still playing? How are the Whalers this year?

How do you think the rotation of VanBiesbrouck and Richter between the pipes will work out for the Rangers this year? Defensemen should be strong with Jeff Beukeboom and of course Brian Leetch.

It's been tough being a Tulsa fan and an Edmonton OIlers fan for the past 8 years. The biggest high point was seeing Tulsa win the Liberty Bowl back in 13 or 14, can't remember which... And watching Tulsa beat UCF twice to win the C-USA championship at home. I made it up for that game and remember Trey Watts picking up the "almost dead ball" punt and run it in for a touchdown while some poor SOB for UCF got blind side blocked and smashed into oblivion on the run back. No matter how much TU sucks, I'm still damn proud to have gone to TU and grown up in Tulsa. Wish they'd start recruiting players who felt the same way.

I don't care one way or the other about the individual achievement awards. I'd like to see the Stanley Cup won by a Canadian team again. It's our only friggin sport and cultural contribution to the world. It's time Canada gets the championship hardware back for the first time in almost 30 years. Time for TU to start winning home games again and the fans to start expecting the W like we did under our favorite turncoat, Todd Graham.

Dane didn’t play tonight. Started a rookie QB. Assume he was held out due to clinching playoffs.

I'm a Blackhawks fan, so I'm still living off recent successes. Watching the team get old and fall victim to the salary cap sucks, but it sure does bring parity to the league. The teams in the hunt this year were bottom feeders five years ago. At least the ones who dont a have top notch GM. There are maybe 5 of those in the league

Van Biesbrouck was one of my favorite goalies growing up. I hated Richter though. And Mark Messier was a d*ck. I have a friend who is considered an expert on hockey autographs and memorabilia and their worth. We used to go to games in Dallas and he'd get autographs from players usually before the morning pre-game skate. Some kid was trying to get Messier's autograph on a card and the kid tripped off the curb and Messier just stepped over him and kept walking. That night in the game, he elbowed Mike Modano and Modano ended up hitting his head on the ice leaving a streak of blood from about center ice to the end boards. Later found out that when they were loading the stretcher into the ambulance, the EMTs dropped Modano off the stretcher onto the floor!

And I always hated Brian Leetch. Boston College dude. BC Sucks!

Bruins were in cap hell for a while too right after their 2011 Cup win. Too much money to Rask and Chara. And for some reason there are a lot of guys who just don't want to play in Boston for whatever reason (Thornton, Seguin). Bruins have maybe 2-3 years left with the Perfection Line in tact and producing before Marchand and Pastrnak want more money than the B's can afford to keep them around. (Best line in hockey easily).

'96 Canadiens last team from Canada to win right?

Who's the best chance for a Canadian team this year? Edmonton? Calgary? (Don't say the Leafs, they're like the NHL's equivalent of the Dallas Cowboys...they're good, they have tons of talent, you just know they're getting bounced in the playoffs though).

Sadly, the Liberty Bowl win was all the way back on New Year's Eve, 2012.

Yeah, cold & rainy evening. And after we spotted Iowa State a 10-0 lead early, I thought we were going to get hammered. Instead the defense showed up and put the hammer down and TU absolutely dominated the LOS on both sides. Pretty sure no Iowa State defender wanted any part of Alex Singleton in the 4th quarter of that game.

As a Wings fan, I relate. 25 years of playoff appearances and 4 cups (very close to others) is a testament in its own right, but it proved so costly. I have never been a fan of dump-and-chase offense, but when we had the grit and speed... It worked! The game has just evolved so much since the cap era started.

Another tidbit;

My HS made playoffs in MOST sports and semi-finals in football.
TU went 10-3 and dominated a team that beat OSU in Stoolwater in the bowl game AND (earlier in the year) appeared in the NCAA tourney.
Atlanta went to the Super Bowl.
The Thunder made the conference finals.
Red Wings overcame the odds and extended the streak.

Since that marvelous year in 2016? They have all sputtered or went to crud. The last few years have been unbearable as a sports fan. I get it, they all choked to some degree in 2016 (or with TU and the HS team's on FB, officiating held them back); at least they made noise! Lol.
