The Tulsa Athletic department just sent me a fairly comprehensive survey of game day experiences this past season. Lots of room for notes all over the survey. Was definitely a step in the right direction for the University to do the survey. They didn't advertise it in the email request to do the survey, but at the end they said they would be sending me a pair of tickets to an upcoming basketball game.

I didn't hold back in the comments sections on my ideas to improve game day experience. Not that I expect any changes because the three emails, with an attachment that outlined the ideas, over the previous 5 years have not led to any!

If your views are shared by the majority of people that take the survey, I would expect they might get enacted. That is if enough people take the survey.

I don't know why they didn't advertise a free gift if you took the survey. I would think the gift was intended as an impetus to fill out the survey. How does that help if you don't advertise it in the request to fill out the survey?

Got the email too, will work on it over the weekend.

I hope it went out to anyone who's bought a ticket in the last few years, not just those of use signed up for athletic updates.

But this is the first time I recall ever getting such a questionnaire.

They need to hire the guy in Twitter who does his own hype videos. They're phenomenal and light years better than the athletic depts. crap they churned out. The one for basketball is on par with Broken Arrow HS's. And aren't we tired of seeing the same video year after year? Same workouts. Have some imaginations folks

They did this last season also. Came with 2 free basketball tickets vs USF.

i didn't get the free tickets yet either. I'm guessing we will get them Monday or Tuesday for the Tulane game. It will be kinda crappy of them if they give out tickets for Wednesdays game until late Tuesday. Won't give some of the people taking the survey much time to make sure their schedule does not conflict.

Doubt they wanna wait till the UCF game to give out tickets. They probably figure a lot of the people taking the survey will buy UCF tickets as opposed to Tulane selling less. Wouldn't want to cheat themselves out of some sales.

I'll probably check if I don't get the email by Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning. If I have to call/email them, then that will be one more comment I will make about the lateness of the tickets in reference to the game not making it much of a promotion for the survey, as well as not advertising it to get people to fill out the survey. They don't even have to say it is tickets in the promo, just market it as a 'gift'.

I filled out the survey... and the answers I came up with are strange.

Basically - I'm happy. They could have more replays (an quicker), less adds on the video board, get the volume set, and faster concession service, but the stadium is nice (after being spoiled at Skelly, I almost always find myself in any other stadium going "why are we so far away!), the prices are fair, and the football is entertaining.

My main issue is that other people apparently aren't happy. I struggle to give away tickets. This year, I bought an additional 6 tickets for a group in town over Thanksgiving, to a great game, and no one but me stayed until the end of the game. They claimed to be football fans, some were TU alumni. The game was going into OT when the last couple left. Sometimes I literally cannot give away my extra season tickets.

The only thing I came up with on the survey is that excitement breeds excitement. The energy level in HA Chapman Stadium often compares unfavorably to gold tournament crowd. So people don't see it as something exciting to go do. OR - it could be a problem of too much TV: better angles, instant replays, stats, not too hot, not too cold, and the beer is free. Plus, TIVO makes it a 2 hour game instead of a 5 hour commitment.

I didn't add that to my survey. Maybe I should have: TV timeouts are ridiculous.

PLAYER INJURY - zoom in on the kid and blather nonsense for 3 minutes.
BACK TO THE GAME - one play later TV timeout

If soccer can be the world most lucrative sport, and find a way to give control of the game to TV networks - surely American football can with numerous natural breaks. If the American only allowed commercials at natural breaks that didn't extend the break... maybe more people would go to games and watch the games.

"Thank you for your support as a Single Game Ticket Purchaser during the 2016 season."

That's why I didn't get a survey the year before. Didn't make any 2015 games.

Seems like you'd also really want to survey prior ticket purchasers that didn't buy a ticket the next season too. I was a single ticket purchaser in 2014.

I purchased single game tickets both years and never got a survey until this year.

I told them I enjoyed a two hour basketball game in controlled weather. Over 4 hours outside in bad weather is really tough for the casual fan who has a TIVO at home.

ESPN either needs to reduce the payouts that are killing them or establish the commercial time based upon how much the teams in that game are being given.
But, while a 3 hour MAC game would be nice, they would get a lot of kickback on a 5.5 hour SEC game.

But, being serious.
4+ hour football games have got to stop. It's not the game, it's the commercials and reviews. Sometimes those reviews go on for 7-8 minutes.

Some are acting like they have control of how long the game lasts. Theres things that can be done to make things more enjoyable, but once it gets to game time, its out of their control. Part of me wishes TU home games are never televised. It would make for much shorter and bigger crowds no doubt. But with the weather issue, do you want them to build a retractable roof for when the weather decides to get bad?

NFL seems to make it work. Charging more for less commercial space isn't rocket science.

The games are way too long - but there is nothing that can be done about that from TU's perspective.

The length of game is pretty much determined by the TV production and as long as we have TV partners, they rule.

The survey has specific questions on things that TU doesn't have control over, like start times.

I called on the tickets and spoke to the marketing department. They said the wanted to wait a week or so to make sure that everybody who fills out the survey has already done so. They should be getting the free tickets in about two weeks. So considering they failed to send them out last year, we will see whether that comes to pass. If they don't come i will call again. You can't promise something and fail to do it repeatedly. A casual fan might be negatively influenced by this.

Start times are rarely a conflict for me. It's all the media timeouts, reviews, etc. They drive me crazy. And it's not like I'm some 8-year-old kid with ADD. I can watch the second half on the jumbotron from several tailgate spots and do whatever the hell I want during the timeouts/stoppages. If I want to go back in, I generally have an extra ticket to do so. Sometimes I just feel like going home and watching the fourth quarter on TV.

I know, I know. I'm a bad fan. Sue me. Sometimes, I just have better things to do.

Yeah I'm more neurotic than most, but I'd have been calling the next day as a casual fan. Or if I thought maybe I could invite 2 people to come with me as a season ticket holder, but I didn't what I'm inviting them to.

Are these for a specific game? Or hopefully a voucher for 2 tix to any game?

Oh, the no reentry thing would have been good to mention.

We left early at homecoming, too many things to do and people to see. Not sure if reentry would have mattered. It was usually good for my non-TU spouse so I could come back in solo if I wanted.

Surprised they didn't ask if you'd bought beer and/or if you cared.

Q1:
I don't know on the specific game or open pass, didn't ask. The games coming up after that time period are Cincinnatti, and SMU. I would think they would give tickets out to a low revenue game,(USF or Tulane) such that casual fan might buy a ticket to the high revenue game, and go to the free ticket game as a bonus, and maybe buy a ticket to the more popular games. Maybe they will get them out in time for UCF.

Q2:
I just filled in a lot on the comment section about drinks and food about beer. Yeah it would have been good if they asked a specific question or two about beer though. I made my requests for dark beer/Marshall's Pub ale when they enact the laws about liquor content!!!

See I think you're much better off getting casual fans into an exciting game. I'd want to bring someone to SMU or Cinci or Memphis of UConn. It's not about immediate revenue it's about building fan support IMO.

Your probably on target with that. They'll have the two highest profile conference games (Cincinnatti & SMU) to choose from if they follow that train of thought.

Last year, the free tickets were for a specific game (USF). A voucher was attached to a subsequent email. You had to sign and take it to the ticket office to get the tickets. It was good for any available seats.

The beer thing is a license issue.
I don't think the new laws will change that.

The new laws will make it more expensive though since there will be fewer distributors and tons of small liquor stores will close.
Less competition = higher prices for the supply chain thus the consumer.

Weatherdemon: for every small liquor store that closes there will be 4 gas stations, grocery stores, and CVSs that can sell wine and beer (which is why the liquor stores are likely to go out of business). That's more competition, not less. It also fails to do away with our sketchy three tier system, meaning we keep the same basic distribution system we currently have (with 8 wholesalers in the state). So no improvement there, but I am not aware of a reduction in the number of distributors (wholesalers).

Hard to think of killing an anti-competitive law as reducing competition.

I haven't reviewed the new law to see what, if any effect it will have on stadium sales. The line between "strong" and "non-intoxicating" beer is certainly blurred. But in that I'm not going to a game to get drunk anyway...

I'm talking about the movement of the lower alcoholic content in licensing to include wine and higher alcoholic content beer instead of only 3.2% beer. I could be wrong, but I don't think there will be three licensing levels, with the event licensing still restricted to 3.2% beer.

You probably don't want to take the chance of trying to introduce fans to the program during what could be a blowout loss (not saying that it will be). I would think a game against a moderate opponent like Memphis or Temple would have been a good team to introduce someone to.

So aston wants ucf. Anybody else want to put their claim in. This pseudo debate is starting to remind me of the three bears...

TU just chose its license level, it's not that it isn't possible. They could legally sell Marshalls now just like Drillers does. TU made that choice, not the state.

It's hands down cheaper and more convenient to buy craft beer and wine in Texas. And the immense selection! The Kroger right outside the dry section of our neighborhood has an actual legit bar. You can buy growlers of the beers you taste right there! We still frequent plenty of liquor stores to buy, you know, liquor. That's the only place you can get it, and the best ones also have better wine selections so are still worth visiting for that. They also conveniently sell things like corkscrews and limes (OK stores cannot).

There is really no comparison as a consumer.

I must not be clear in what I'm expressing this morning, because several people are missing my point.(Not just in this post.) I understand that the University went for the lower alcohol content by choice. What I am talking about is the bar(pun intended) being raised for the lower alcohol content in a couple of years from 3.2 to 13.whatever. That will essentially all but eliminate 3.2% beer from being sold in this state, will it not?

This has become way more complicated of an issue than it needs to be.

A man can dream.

Hence a voucher for any game is really the best.

Watch, it's going to be that Sunday February ECU game. Gag.

You're probably right.

That is senior night though. It would be nice to have a good crowd for Birt's last home game.
