Cincy game thoughts (and the reason no one remembers that cost us the game)

Causes for loss:

1. Substitution patterns. Yes I'm afraid Haith struggled here. Oversubbing the first half let Cincy back in the game. This game was too big for both Aston and Korita. But the worst substituting was taking the player of the game (Igbanu) out after he got 5 straight points and 4 rebounds in a span of about 4 minutes. He was unstoppable. The other bad sub move was taking Etou out with 3 fouls and not inserting him until under 7 minutes. You don't leave you best player on the bench with 3 fouls.

2. Next big mistake......4000 of us know that the best player at the end of the game in the AAC is Caupain. And we let him take us as if we were surprised he was going to take the late shots.

3. Turnovers. Guards driving into traffic killed us.

4. (and the reason no one remembers) We lost two points on a technical foul that I still don't know what happened. If we had those two we are up 11 instead of 9 with a little bit of time left.

Good Points

1. Igbanu- Played like a champion. Up and under moves fooled Cincy's big men and he got nearly every board. Love his hustle.

2. TK on the boards. Great rebounding .

3. Wheeler was steady except for the turnovers.

When all is said and done only one thing cost us the game, missing two of three free throws (three of four if you count the potential second on the 1-1). We make those four freebies and we're up one with 4.4 to go. Then they have to foul us and try to make a shot with less than 4 on the clock.

I am guessing the T was some sort of taunting call. TK seemed to look at a Cincinnati player and say something after the dunk. But it just seemed like harmless enthusiasm.

This game was all on Haith. He choked. Virtually didn't sub the last 5 minutes until one minute left. Their big has four fouls with 6 minutes left and we don't throw it into the post but one time! He eats us up on the offensive end. Agree we didn't cover Chaupain late and he made us pay.
Plus they are running a 2-3 matchup zone and we just run it around the perimeter and then Woj up a prayer, turn it over or drive the lane and just throw it up in the air and hope for a bailout foul. NO OFFENSIVE PLAYS.
Finally how do you have Birt in the game the last four minutes when they are extending their D? He has almost no ballhandling skills and is maybe our slowest player. If he isn't scoring he needs to be sitting. And he has Wheeler as being subbed out for Henderson the last minute after Wheeler turned it over while keeping Birt out there when he literally handed the ball to the Cinncy player!
Poor clock management and poor decision.
The kids played great for the most part. For us to be tied with under 10 seconds left with Taplin shooting like 2-13, Birt with 2 total and Junior having a pedestrian game, that is saying something. I really hated losing that game but I do feel good about our young kids. They need muscle and better outside shots but I love the potential.

It was assessed on other side of court after he followed Edogi. That official needs to be suspended. Watch him touch Haith.

I cannot stand grandstanding refs.

It wasn't grandstanding so much as it was a stalker situation. He actually follows Edogi into huddle. I've never seen that before. That ref probably cried when we knocked them out of the tournament.

Not a big fan of pulling everyone back on late game free throws. You get no shot at an offensive rebound and it gives the shooter a different look. But Taplin's the guy we want at the line in that spot. He just missed it.

I was sitting next to a retired college coach and he kept saying "why are we not taking the ball toward Washington to get his 5th foul? " Igbanu had just destroyed him in the previous few minutes but was taken out and TK doesn't have Martins offensive moves to draw the foul.

The biggest issue is Birt. He continues to be a liability and does not need to play. Gives us nothing and is not productive. How does a senior throw it away and miss a point blank shot in the last 2 minutes.

Birt is an offensive liability but defensively he has been very good.

He was much more judicious with his shot selection yesterday so he did not shoot us out of the game. The late turnover was a very visible problem though - really unfortunate.

The T was because TK got a little too rowdy. He was talking crap to the Cincinnati player after the dunk but the refs let that go. Then at half court he did it again and the refs still let it go. However, when the time out was called TK started hollering at the Cincinnati bench and two TU guys kinda had to pull him back. That's when they called the T.

He was definitely out of line with how he addressed Haith with the situation. When does a ref follow a player into a huddle to scold him? I've never seen anything like that...ever.

Washington said something to TK as he was coming back down the floor. You can't make it out but you see him mouth something at TK right when the time out was called and then you see TK jawing back.

Cincy got away with a lot of crap last night. #34 (Cumberland?) steps into Etou across the foul line just after Etou lets his FT go and gives him a shove. Clark is a grabby handsy player...probably voted for Trump because he can just get away with it. Guys coming through the lane getting hip checked...no calls. Etou drives and gets shoved from behind and then Clark slides (sideways) into Etou and Etou gets the player control call.

When Cumberland fouled Etou on that free throw, the ref pulled him aside and told him where to go on a free throw. But somehow he missed the part where Etou got mauled.

"They need muscle and better outside shots but I love the potential." This is what we have coming with the recruiting class, more athleticism and hopefully equal the shooting of Birt. Hopefully the other part will happen in the weightroom.

I think we can do better than equal shooting of Birt, the way he has shot this year.

Birt has lost his confidence and even with the mistakes Taplin hits his free throws and the Cane is up five. Misses his free throw and then fouls the shooter for a 3-point play to tie the game. Birt turns it over with the game tied and Taplin races down the court and doesn't even look to pass to either wing (Birt was one of the wings) and loses the ball. Game over.

^^^THIS ^^^

I think the "different look" is big. Especially with 4 Cincinnati players in front of him & the game on the line. A couple of his team mates with him at the line might have helped.

I'd like to know more about what exactly happened. The broadcast said TK said something to Washington, but it didn't look like much and there was no way that official saw much if that was the case.

I really think I saw the official touch Haith in his chest. It was highly insulting and demeaning. I'm glad I'm not a coach. I would have put that ref on his ass.

I'm not surprised our beat writer hasn't covered this.

+1. The other problem with pulling everyone back is if the shooter does miss, the rebounders can advance the ball down the court quickly. A little defense might slow them down a second or two, or cause them to have to alter a pass.

If you are looking for verification then all I can say is if that finger didn't touch Haith's chest then I need glasses. I actually saw a slight movement backward from Haith, not like he pulled back, like the force of the finger pushed him back a little bit. And I had a slightly frontal profile view of them when it happened,

I can't say for sure if he touched Haith but the ref definitely got up in Haith's face, finger wagging and was pretty animated. That's when Haith went nuts and Kim English has to hold him back.

Also, saw English working with Korita on his outside shot before the game and having a wider base to receive the ball and give him a little extra up on the jump shot.

It was right in front of me and I swear I saw it touch. It all happened quickly and was very confusing. A lot of people didn't see the tech called and the view was obstructed because of players on the court. It was all very wrong.

I really feel like our league does not care about these types of issues. Cinci's coach says profane things the entire game and is never warned. Our player says one thing and it's a tech and our coach gets treated like a second class citizen. I'd like to ask about this on the call in show, but I doubt we ever get an official response:

Jeb Hartness is the official in question. He's the one who ejected Floyd a few years back when Floyd lost is cool and the police had to intervene. And get this, that technical was for leaving the box.

From a Tulsa perspective, he was the worst official on the court. He let a lot of Cincy contact go, yet seemed to whistle lesser contact by Tulsa, especially in the first half.

Exactly. It was cleaner in second half, but it seemed like in the first half Vegas got nervous around the 10 minute mark when we still were in the game.

And that's around the time of the technical foul where he followed our player across the court after a dunk and timeout. He didn't hear what was said because it was so loud in there.

Jeb. Auto-correct. He looked more like a Rachel to me.
He looked more like a Sue to me.

Right after I heard somebody bitching bout a call, could of sworn I heard him say 'me Sue', or maybe 'Sue, me'. He reffed like a caveman, or someone on the commish's payroll...
