IMO, it wasn't as much of a size issue as it was an understanding issue. Korita is the same size and both played the wing position. He didn't seem to understand fully what was going on, on both offense or defense. He seemed lost on offense and never got good defensive position, either in zone or man.
Yes, he did play the 4 some, in small lineups but I believe that was more to limit him playing further from the basket. I mentioned this before, but I coached a player very similar. He never picked up our offense and didn't understand help defense.
He chose to stay on our team but never got much playing time. I agree with Gold that he could be good in another situation, where they play more unstructured. And that will most likely be at a lower D1 level.
Evaluating prospects is difficult. You can watch a player run and dunk or shoot the 3-pointer, but in AAU play, where most of the prospects are seen, it's more like semi-structured street ball. Its easy to see athleticism--more difficult to judge BB IQ or game understanding.
Some players, like Magnay, picked up everything and did it quickly. Atson and a few others, not so quickly. I wish both Travis and Joseph the very best. In many situations like this, the player ends up in a better situation and is happier in the end. I hope that's the case.
