Most of the sporting world believes “Year 3” is a good barometer to assess the future success of a coach. Assuming this measurement system is accurate, let’s assess Monty’s third year...
-Offense: C-
While the QB position was a disaster, I thought the O-Line played very well as advertised. Brewer had a great year and our 3rd down conversion was actually pretty solid. Unfortunately, the poor QB performance was exacerbated by WR’s that couldn’t get open.
-Defense: F
Just terrible for most of the season. The decent performance during the South Florida and Houston games were nice, but also anomalies. Anemic pass rush without the appearance of “plus” athletes anywhere on the defensive side.
-Recruiting: D
Thus far, Shamari Brooks is the primary bright spot...a very bright spot! Unfortunately, that’s about it. The biggest disappointment is the inability of Monty to be able to to find a solid QB within 3.5 recruiting classes. With his perceived reputation, this is a massive miss and major cause for concern related to his future as a head coach.
Also, the strength of his classes seem to be weakening each year...especially in comparison to his conference peers.
Future Prognosis - Poor
The injuries were rough, no doubt... As a fan, I appreciate the fight in the team. However, if year three is any indication, the talent Monty is bringing in isn’t going to compete with the majority of the AAC.
Important Note - As a fan base: D-
We need to attend games...the City of Tulsa continues to support this university poorly. As a result, we need to flood the athletic programs with donor money. If we want different results, we have to show unconditional commitment to our University...especially financially.
