∙ No. 18 SMU will play back-to-back games in the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic and takes on Hampton Thursday night at Moody Coliseum (7 p.m. ET, TWC/ESPN3). SMU defeated Nicholls State, 86-42, in its last time out on Wednesday behind 22 points and 15 rebounds from Ben Moore. Freshman Shake Milton tied his season-high with 20 points and Jordan Tolbert added 18 points and a career-high 23 rebounds. Tolbert’s 23 boards tied the American single-game record set by Memphis’ Shaq Goodwin on Feb. 7, 2015.
∙ B.J. Tyson scored 21 points and Caleb White added 20 to lift East Carolina past UNC Wilmington, 78-73, Wednesday night at Minges Coliseum. The Pirates extended its non-conference home unbeaten streak to 11 games and earned its first win over the Seahawks in Greenville since Dec. 31, 2005.
∙ Houston posted the program’s first 7-1 start through eight games since 2008-09 with Wednesday’s 73-65 win over North Carolina Central in the Global Basketball Classic. Devonta Pollard led the Cougars with 16 points in the win. Houston connected on nearly 52-percent of its 27 shots from the field in the second half.
∙ Five Bulls scored in double figures including a career-best 22 points from freshman Jahmal McMurray in USF’s 88-75 win over Jacksonville Wednesday at the Sun Dome. USF shot 63.3-percent from the field, the fourth best output in school history and the highest since Nov. 26, 2004 when the Bulls shot a school-record 64.7-percent against Stetson. USF recorded its 600th win in program history with the victory over the Dolphins.
