American Athletic Conference Men’s Basketball Notes
Around the League:
∙ USF travels to Newark, Del., to take on the Delaware Blue Hens in the lone American game on Thursday.
∙ Shaq Goodwin (Memphis), Shaquille Harrison (Tulsa) and Semi Ojeleye (SMU) are nominees for the 2016 Allstate National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Good Works Team®, the Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA), NABC and Allstate Insurance Company announced on Wednesday. In its fourth year, the Allstate WBCA and NABC Good Works Teams® recognize players at all levels of college basketball who have made outstanding contributions in the areas of volunteerism and civic involvement.
∙ Nic Moore (SMU) and Shaquille Harrison (Tulsa) have been named to the Naismith Trophy Men’s College Player of the Year Early Season Watch List, the Atlanta Tipoff Club announced on Wednesday. The Atlanta Tipoff Club administers the Naismith Award, which has become one of the most prestigious national honors in all of college basketball. Named in honor of Dr. James Naismith, inventor of the game of basketball, the Naismith Trophy presented by AT&T recognizes the top Men’s College Basketball Players of the Year.
∙ The American posted a 7-1 mark on Wednesday. UConn, Houston, Temple and Tulane all posted home wins while UCF, No. 22 SMU and Tulsa each won on the road.
∙ Daniel Hamilton (UConn) recorded his third double-double of the season in the Huskies’ win over Sacred Heart while the Cougars improved to 5-0 and wrapped up a five-game home stand with a win over Murray State. Temple held off a late lead by Fairleigh Dickinson and topped the Knights, 79-70, and Dylan Osetkowski notched fourth double-double of the year in Tulane’s win over New Orleans. James Woodard and Shaquille Harrison added 15 and 14 points, respectively, to lead Tulsa to a 66-56 win over Oklahoma State at Gallagher-Iba Arena. The Golden Hurricane outscored the Cowboys 17-7 over the final five minutes to pick up its first win against OSU in Stillwater since 1985. Nic Moore scored 26 points and Sterling Brown made a tiebreaking shot with 1:37 left to lift No. 22 SMU over TCU 75-70 in Fort Worth, Texas. The Mustangs led in second-chance points 24-11 and have won 10 of their last 11 road contests.
