It was 15 years ago that TU basketball made a late season rush to the NCAA tournament, only to bow out in heartbreaking fashion. Here is a Classic Moment from the website on that team:

How does a team with KJ and Swanson blow a 13 point lead with 3:45 left??? Seriously... how? The odds are wildly low. That's a 5 possession game --- that's no less than 2:30 off the clock and the other team scoring every time down the floor within 15 seconds or less.

Still pissed.

The last 4 minutes it seems we quit attacking and started playing not to lose. That was not how this team was recruited by Self to play and it was not their style. However, it was the style of their coach. There rest is just a sad part of TU bball history.

The real problem is the coach had no idea how to stop a run. He had no instinct for when the timeout needed to be called, couldn’t call an inbounds play to save his life and certainly had no idea to make an adjustment against a certain type of defense that had you in a rut.

I remember a shot of our bench and our guys were relaxed, laughing, and appeared to be making jokes.
I knew we were in trouble right then.

I think that was the one and only time my wife made a sesame chicken recipe she came across. Bad juju after that.

That was the unofficial end to our regular appearance in the NCAA tournament. I’ll never forget that shot in the corner.

I was covering the game for the Oklahoman, back when the Oklahoman covered TU sports, and I was their Tulsa guy. Man, that was a tough story to write. Wiscy coach kept talking and talking. I kept leaving the interview room to type so I didn't have to hear him.I would come back every few minutes and he still was talking. I was waiting for Tulsa's comments. I couldn't sleep that night after the game.

Got into an argument with World writer Dan O'Kane in the airport. We were talking and I said it was a shame since Tulsa was better than Wisconsin and blew the game. He said that the best team always wins. So I said, I guess the Russians were better in the 72 Olympics?

I still hate listening to "On Wisconsin", which it seems like every other high school football team in Oklahoma played at one time. I joke with a friend of mine that every time we are playing golf, any mention of Wisconsin ruins our golf games.

I'm not sure. I heard he was a salesman, I think pharms, a few years ago, but it's been awhile.

When you hear Swanson and Parker talking in this interview you can see how much it meant to them to represent Tulsa. Having TULSA across that jersey was a big thing. This is something that has been missing somewhat in our guys the last decade IMO.

The best team always wins?! That's especially absurd in the context of the one and done NCAA tournament.

It's called lack of a leader from the bench. This can happen when the players lead themselves.

In my book it was the worst/most inexcuseable loss of that era.

Agreed. UMBC is not a better team than Virginia. They played a better game on that one night, but that's all you need in the NCAA tournament. Now, I do think the best team overall won the championship, but that's not always the case.

John Phillips was the antithesis of Buzz Peterson. Buzz wanted to micromanage games. Phillips played it the other way having confidence in the players...at least that's what I thought. The following 2 years proved he was never ready to be D1 head coach.
